REV Modular Wireless Follow Focus System

Will it move full size cinema lenses? Also, please test the crap out of it (ie. 1000 or more pulls on a big lens or as many as it takes to break it). Too many products announced here have made it to market only to fall apart on the job. Not expecting Arri or Preston but a certain level of reliability would be sweet. Warranty?

Hi!

Latency can get a bit apples-and-oranges, as it depends on what you're measuring.

Some systems communicate position data to the motor with servo frames every 20ms, and that doesn't seem to pose much of a problem in practice (it's about half a video frame in length), just to keep all this in perspective.

We haven't done any formal tests, but relatively unoptimised code is showing circa 5 to 6 ms, i.e. 6 thousandths of a second, or about 1/7th of a video frame. Our tests show no perceived difference in performance using reference signal delays of <20ms ish, but we'll certainly optimise it down wherever possible.

The reality is that a seek/ feedback algorithm can easily add tens of milliseconds of perceived latency, and the motor will take at least tens of milliseconds to accelorate (especially when meshed to a stiff lens), so there are many factors.

Hope that helps!

Hi Tim! 1 year warranty initially. We're testing very heavily, and we're making sure that the unit keeps performing properly even when taking mechanical wear and tear (as all moving parts do in time). It's a high priority for us.

like i said before , im very interested , but you have to keep us interested in your product by ...
1: posting pics of the finish product and , expl: in your website , if im buying something worth 1300 $ i would like to know what im buying ..pics of the set and what comes with, will be good
2: pdf manual and specs will be good too , we want to know the size the weight and others ....
3: 50 days leading time been there for over 50 days :) if im buying something either a job came up or i need it , but to wait for almost 2 months i rather pay litlle extra
by all mean as i can see ,its very nice piece of work you have , but i dont have time to wait to see tests how it works and wait for another 50 days , so i wil need another 4 to 5 months til i can buy it , you couldve cut it down by posting updates , tests on the field and pics , till then if i didnt get the OTHER you will be seing me
keep us informed thank you

Hi Djgvinny!

Delivery for the first batch is still end of March- it was offered on our website in early Feb (definitely not 50 days ago..!), so that's where the '50 days' came from. Currently any new orders placed we still aim to ship in that first batch, so I'll update the website to make the lead-time thing clearer.

Product Manual and publicity shots are all coming, to be honest we're prioritising dealing with suppliers to hit all our targets and make the product the best it can be, so publicity hasn't been the top factor -- we're not in a hurry to take more pre-orders, we'll be shipping from-stock soon enough.

In terms of size and weight, this is pretty final so I'm sure we'll have those specs up on the site soon.

We have more product announcements coming (all compatible with the upcoming system), but I'll wait until we have photos of what we're offering before going public with that!

Kris -

You guys around? I have been trying to reach you via your website with no luck - had a few questions.

I'd like to know if there is an update as well. I got my order in among the first and supposedly they are to ship "the end of March." I have been attempting contact for over a week now but with no response. Hopefully Kris is watching this thread and will give us all an update.

Just got an update from Kris and Jamie at RTMotion,

They've posted some video and new pics of the kit here:
http://www.rtmotion.com/update.htm

It also sounds like they're delaying shipping for another week or two to make sure everything is working as it should.

Looking forward to getting my order for sure.

There is no practical limit to the number of turns the Digital Motors will do.

A track/ slider system and hot-head based on the motors (including wireless PC control) are on the way.

Sound is my biggest concern. We would want to use these for many shoots, including narratives where I don't want any background noise. If these output too much sound, they are useless to me.

We consider sound performance to be excellent, particularly at performing smooth racks as you would with Drama.

I work as a DP, so I'm well aware that this is a top design consideration. We have a few modes which help you bias this-- "Responsive" is incredibly sharp, at the expense of noise. "Smooth/Quiet" smooths moves and caps max speed, to prevent you (or your operator) making hardly any noise.

They'll be in customers' hands soon so you'll have proper comparisons-- plenty of pro users with experience with more expensive systems have pre-ordered, so their opinions will be interesting.

Kris

(p.s. You won't find many manufacturer's publishing videos of their motors' noise performance, as without having a bunch of units side-by-side with fixed audio gain it obviously doesn't show anything. notice also that moves in our video are mostly between 180 - 200 degrees+ for the purposes of demonstration-- these would all be considered pretty big/fast racks by most 'drama' standards)

Thanks for the response, Kris.

I am really looking forward to seeing your follow focus in action. I do hope that it will work well for us.
