Return Levels to a Sound Devices 552

Hi all-

Just did a shoot where I ran a 552 into an HDX900 with a breakaway cable. The return level from the camera was a solid 8db quieter than when monitoring direct, even when the headphone gain on the camera was all the way up.

I'd prefer to just listen to the return, but that would cause me to mix too hot probably.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers.

First make sure the headphone volume on the camera is set where you want it to be (sometimes I put it on 10, sometimes lower depending on the camera).
On the 552 there is adjustment to the headphone return volume simply by holding the return switch to the left (A) or to the right (B) and while you are holding it turn the menu button up or down.

When you have issues like this with any piece of gear check out the manual. More than likely your answers will be in there.

I should've known to RTFM. But do you send tone to the camera, set it at -20, and then set your return gain to 0 after that?

I adjust it by ear to match the 552 level.
If the return volume is lower than the 552, I turn it up, if the return volume is higher than the 552 I turn it down.
