rethinking the me66 k6

You speak about the ME66 like its your ex-girlfriend, jeremy... ha ha! seven times, wow thats pretty hectic. ive had two, and one was given to me. lucky me..

if you selling those 416s, Im keen... I love them, and will continue to love them until i can afford a sanken.

Without dropping names, the "big hollywood mixers" I have talked with are almost all using the 416 as their primary shotgun. Why? It sounds great, it's built like a fricking tank, and more then anything else, they already own it.

Cheers

I didn't know this. So Hollywood will throw a 100 million into a production, throw another 20 million to get Brad Pitt, but the soundguy has to use his own equipment? Sheesh.

oh heck yeah...

but, to be fair, its actually usually a better deal for the sound person - their rate is correspondingly higher, they work on gear that they understand and have experience with, and it keeps the riffraff (like me) from getting jobs on huge films that may be too big for them.

i dont think its a bad thing...

That's amusing. I'm thinking offhand that might be the only guy in production chain that uses his own gear? Maybe makeup? I guess the caterers use their own tupperware...

The talk about using your own gear is worthy of it's own thread on many levels... what do you do when you're trying to get your shot and you see somebody struggling with equipment off to your side? Or how about when you're between shots and your $4K sound kit is litterally splayed out in the dirt? Or how about watching somebody walk with a $2K mic package on the end of a boom pole through a bustling crowd... and he's got the mic side down at everybody's feet like he's walking a dog?

It's not only stressful to watch somebody else treat your investment carelessly... it's stressful to lose quality to someone's lack of familiarity with the gear... and my sympathetic side tells me that it must be stressful for that other person showing incompetance on set too. (although I don't think about their feelings so much when they're abusing my equipment)

Trust me... if you provided all the audio gear to most people on a set... they'd trash it in one project... it's kind of rediculous, but people don't appreciate the cost of things unless it's money out of THEIR wallet... then combine that with the out of control egos in this business at all levels and you have people who aren't even willing to LEARN how to properly use the gear they don't own...

The constant suggestions about renting pro gear aren't so crazy when you watch what I like to call the "monkey and football" scenario while you need to be shooting... and the worst part is that the lack of knowledge that makes them look bad will make you look bad too.

The point I mean to make is that having a competant sound guy (who brings his own tools) means that you don't have to worry about the condition/function of the gear... the proper selection of the right gear for the job... or the person's ability to get the best result out of that package.

e.

Yeah! the first time I rented my ME66 (yep! most people don't know what a POS it is!) a grip attached the boom and mic to a c-stand. He didn't clamp the c-stand enough so my ME66 did its best impersonation of an oil well and hammered right onto the concrete floor. Thanks guys!

POS.. ha ha first time ive heard that one. hope the mic had a softy on to protect it.. not even me66's deserve to die at the hands of grips! :)

i try not to rent my stuff unless i know the person im renting to. its such easy money when people look after your stuff...

I never rent anything out but I will let friends borrow whatever they need for a project. I'm really into kharma and believe what goes around comes around so personally I know that there will be a situation where I'll need something sometime and then that personal will hopefully step up and help me out.

My camera, on the other hand, I don't let out of my site, but depending on the friend... well I don't know.

I'm looking to buy some mic's. I was considering the ME66 but I take it as I'm just getting my first shotgun, many of you think the 4073a is better. As my first mic would you siggest the 4073a? Maybe I should get a package. Any help would be appreciated. Hmmm . . . I'm also thinking about some wireless mics, but I get the feeling I'd be using a shotgun more than anything else in my work.
