Resident Agitator
I'm about to apply for a few jobs, and I think my resume needs some work. Anybody care to make some suggestions? I don't have a hell of a lot of experience, but I know a few people at the companies I'm applying at... whether or not that is going to help my case is unknown.

My dad says that I need to make it more skill oriented.

Any thoughts or suggestions would help me out big-time. Thanks guys.

One is for a Render Wrangler at DreamWorks (I know some of the current wranglers up north.)

And a friend of a friend said he might have an opening or two at Dolby, but he wants to see my resume to see my experience.

...I feel like I know a hell of a lot more about this stuff than my resume shows.

Hey TC, I see that you are going to CSUN. That is my alma mater. That is where I got my bachelors degree in Film Production. Is Nate Thomas still teaching there? He's great, I loved that guy. Soumah is excellent as well.

Rick

Yep, Nate Thomas is still here. I don't get a class with him for another year, but I can't wait... I've heard nothing but good things.

How long ago did you graduate?

I think it was 2001. It was a decent program. And now that you've got that Alan Armor sound stage it must be even better.

There were a few teachers I could have done without. And the department itself had some screwy politics....like not offering enough pre-requisite classes for everybody which would ultimately cause many to not graduate on time. It was Nate who shoved me into his class with a buddy of mine which allowed us to graduate on time.

He's funny too.

That's EXACTLY where I'm at right now. I have to wait for next semester to get into the Film Production class (there was a brief snafu with my photo classes not transfering.) Actually, that's why I'm looking for a job now... because I'll be graduating later than I budgeted for.

Ahh, I see they are still pulling that sh*t. Its a scam. The only reason Nate ever caved was because my buddy and I, who were NOT registered for his class, showed up on time day in and day out. We'd stop by his office to see if anyone dropped to make room for us, we took the tests...etc...Eventually, after weeks of this, he caved.

They do that on purpose. This forces you to borrow more $ for another semester or two. If you can help it, don't give into it.

hey tc...yeah, maybe try to build the skills section up a bit more. like break it down into 3d, 2d and go a little deeper into what you know...like how experienced are you in those packages....also might be good to add a more in depth opening paragraph about your goals and what are you want to get into.

something...i dunno...hard when your your just getting goin. once people start giving you breaks you will start thinking what things you do and dont want to list on that thing.

so your in northridge now? thats like 20 minutes from me...i may have a project next week on the 15th...would you be around? wish i could sched the shoot for a weekend, but the band is on tour and thats the only day as of now. i may post something in the jobs forum, but i want to wait til i get the green light...little project, no money but would be fun.

blah blah...good luck on the resume. hey, just a thought, maybe you could spice up the look a bit with a more slick font or layout? i dunno...just an idea...

Say you are looking for an entry level pos with the goal of becoming a technical director... stress your attention to backing up, documenting and following technical conventions such as file naming schemes and directory structures. Play up tech
skills and tone down the art. Let them know you are familiar with file formats and
video tape/DVD layoffs of image sequences. Move Maya to the top of your 'Apps' space.

There are plenty of applicants that want to 'animate', if you focus (or claim to
focus) on an artistic/technical track, you stand out as a potential studio investment.

If you claim wanna be aniamator, you're judged almost solely on your current reel.

Got any stuff online? I'd love to take a look at your maya work. I'd love to
give you a reference. I spent a number of years as a disney TD and the DW/Disney
crews ebb and flow back and forth from each studio... lots of inbreeding :)

You know you're the best person for the job so you need to make sure you get noticed. If your skills and experience don't speak loud enough then you won't get heard. Spice it up a bit. Don't lie, but don't be afraid to boast a little. Also, as Rich said, do something to make the layout more interesting (but not TOO interesting). Google (via Isara) "resume templates" to get some ideas.

Maybe end your resume with, "But enough about me...." :)

Good luck!
