resolving the "breaks in vfr/pulldown cadence" issue once and for all

I, like many people, have encountered the "breaks in VFR/pulldown cadence were detected" ERROR message while trying to batch capture footage recorded on a DVX in 24pA with FCP Studio 6. I have read all the discussions on dvxuser and elsewhere on the internet and, I must say, I feel like no one out there really seems to have a clue why this happens or what to do about it. DVX / Panasonic professionals or representatives out there are invited to contribute.

This is NOT an issue of cadence breaks across record start-stop cuts in the footage as I am capturing inside one long static take with no cuts. (Other people have encountered this problem under these conditions.) This is NOT an issue of computer RAM or an older version of FCP as I am running 6.0.3 on an iMac G5 with 2.5GB of RAM. I have my capture presets correct at 29.97 with Advanced Pulldown Removal and the clips that I have been able to capture smoothly come through in 23.98 and everything is peachy. I record on Panasonic PQ tapes and never use the same tape twice.

Yes, I am capturing to an external firewire hard drive, but the tape deck (and it's a professional tape deck not a cheap camcorder so that's not the issue either) is running directly into the external drive, not passing through the computer. It seems possible that the hard drive processing speed is the issue, but if that's the case then how can anyone ever complete large projects in 24pA as my footage will far overfill the 160GB on the computer...?

So please...what is this about???

You should not daisy chain the deck into the drive. Each one should have it's own connection to the computer.

As far as your computer goes that machine should work but even the best iMac G5 is 5 years old.

Having shot over 900 hours on DVX-100A and always 24pA and never using pulldown capture, I would ask have you examined you reasons for capturing and editing 24p. You can shoot 24p and not deliver 24p.

Upon the suggestion I wired the tape deck directly into my computer instead of passing it through the external firewire drive and still encountered the same problem. Oh well, it was a nice thought.

The work was shot in 24pA because that was the look desired for the finished product. While I may have the option of forgetting about the pulldown altogether and editing as 29.97, my issue is that removing pulldown during capture is something that both the DVX and FCP are SUPPOSED to be able to do with no trouble at all. Why is this such a recurring problem for, apparently, so many people?

Further thoughts appreciated.

Well... apparently either everyone else who has encountered this problem has figured out a solution, or no one anywhere can help provide one...?? Attempting to restart this thread as I strongly feel this issue should be addressed / resolved.
