Resolution Woes

I am in the pre-production stage for an independent comedy that will be shot next summer. I have been extremely impressed with the footage that I've seen from the DVX. However, my question involves the difference between say the 380,000? pixel DVX and a 2.2 megapixel Cinealta when the end result is played on a 50 ft screen. From reading the article on "November" I gathered that with the DVX the resolution is less then ideal at this size. Is it worth it to rent a 24P HD set up if I have the money? What about up-rezzing the DVX?

Re: Resolution Woes

A DVX can't compare with a cinealta. The DVX's worth less than a Cinealta's day's rent (with lenses and all...). If you have the money to go HD, do yourself the favor. If not, the DVX can do some neat tricks. If you stick to SD, there are other choices to evaluate too. Talk to the DP and to some rental houses they will give you a better idea.

Remember, it is not just enough to rent an HD camera and lenses and then shoot with it, you will probably want to edit your footage as well, and you can't just hook the camera up via fire wire, so take that into consideration. Renting editing equipment can get spendy as well.

Re: Resolution Woes

Absolutely. They are so different leagues, this comparisson is close of not making sense... ;D

Re: Resolution Woes

That's a good point. How much does it cost to down convert HD video for a feature length film and where can I have it done? Anyone have experience with this?

Re: Resolution Woes

You might want to check out the Panasonic SDX900, which has a firewire connection for input into you editing software, but the CineAlta yields more resolu.
