Resident Evil 4: Afterlife

Being a huge fan of the games, I sat through all 3 of the movies and hated all of them. I was hoping the 3rd one would be decent because Wesker is in it, but it was just as bad.

I think I'll actually watch this one too because I've already invested so much time watching this train wreck of a series.

I did like Anderson's Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon.

Yeah, but the scripts sucked in the games. The games are great, but the characterization, dialog and storylines are awful.

Heck, Call of Duty Modern Warfare (1 and 2) are my fave games right now, but a movie using its characters even loosely based on its scripts would be god awful.

Considering that the RE movies came from such a horrible original story (as did the novels), I think both the novels and the films hold up pretty well.

You can't really compare the enjoyment of playing a game to its watchability as a film.

Again, though, I'll defend the movies as there are much, much, MUCH worse action and/or game based movies out there than the RE series.

God, think of the Mario Bros movie, Street Fighter films, those barf fest Tomb Raider movies. God man!! Thank of HITMAN!!!

:::shudders:::

All in all I think RE fares on the side of "not too shabby" along with the original Mortal Kombat.

I think Prince of Persia has a marginal chance of cracking the stigma, but I certainly wouldn't bet on it.

I think what made the RE games great (at least the first two) was that the story was not too deep, allowing you to want to explore and find out more. They couldn't spill too many beans early on. Also, there was so much tension in those games that it might've been too much to have to keep track of an intricate story.

There are probably enough elements in the games that could be elaborated and expanded upon if there ever were a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare film.

I definitely agree. The Resident Evil movies are not even nearly as bad as those other video game films. Although, Hitman was also not nearly as bad as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat II, and Super Marion Bros.

I'd say the Resident Evil films are much much better than either Mortal Kombat film.

Mortal Kombat could be great if done in Hong Kong and if directed by a Hong Kong action/martial arts savvy director. Think if they wrote a really great script and got the guy who did Hero for a new Mortal Kombat film? Or somebody like the Wachowski Bros. could also do something really great with it too.

I think it could too.

Also, Gears of War, Halo, and Mass Effect - all of which were in development not too long ago could also be ones that crack the stigma.

Of course, we already have a pretty darn good videogame movie in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, even though it was also very different from the games that it was not a completely clean or true adaptation, I'd say it is the best videogame adaptation so far. Still a really cool sci-fi/action flick though that in a way transcended its source material (not to say it was better) by being a new story and not so much an adaptation of the games' storylines.

If you liked FF Spirits Within (I also think it worked really well, although American audiences were pretty put off by the realistic CGI) you should check out Resident Evil: Degeneration. It follows the characters from Resident Evil 2 and it follows the game canon. It's not as good as the RE movies IMO (kind like how Final Fantasy: Advent Children wasn't as good as Spirits Within because it too followed game canon), but there's a few sweet scenes in RE:D. Definitely worth checking out.

I liked the first film. Hated the others. The last one was terrible. But that's just me. Death race suprised me, I kind of liked that one.

I thought the 3rd RE movie was a lot of fun. The "boss" monster alone was light years better than the "boss" monsters in 1 and 2.

The second one was so lacking because the Nemesis creature was too rubbery and odd and Jill Valentine was...just something was so far off about her performance. I don't know if it's because she was foreign or what, but something was just weird and rigid and flat there.

I'm not a huge fan of the whole mental powers thing they did with Alice. I think that got away from what Resident Evil is really about; I also think it was a shame that they decimated the entire planet (especially as they attributed it somehow to the T-virus which is just like, "huh?" That's like saying the planet caught the HIV, ya know?). They should have said that humans had to nuke major cities in order to wipe out the infestations which would have given the same decimated earth effect without the head scratching pseudo science.

For me, though, the 3rd act of RE:3 saves it. If it was just photoshopped Jovovich running around using her brain powers, that would have sucked. But when they go back underground into all the faux RE:1 spaces and she faces off against a pretty cool monster in dark, closed spaces, that worked for me.

It's still ashame that they can never come back from what they did in RE:3, though, with the world all uninhabited and in absolute anarchy now. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a Resident Evil: Zero someday after these movies have passed. There's plenty of stories that can be told from other character's perspectives -- easy enough way to reboot the franchise. And with a fresh perspective maybe we'll get more of a horror bend on the series which a lot of the fans wished for from the beginning.

I'm waiting to see what happens in part 4, though. I wouldn't be surprised if the clones have some sort of death mechanism (like, they can't survive longer than such and such a time frame, ya know? Blade Runner-esque).

I'll be there opening night same as I was for AVP and AVP:R. Gotta support the franchises if you want to see them make more of them, good or bad.
