Researching for HD camcorder

Hey guys,

I'm a panasonic fan. My AG-DVX100a has served me well over the years, but it's time for me to move on to HD and I was wondering if you guys had any preferences. I realize this is a DVX board, but non-panasonic suggestions are welcome.

I'm interested in the AG-HVX200, but want to do as much research as possible. A buddy of mine is trying to sell me on the Sony V1U, which has a good price, but I need to do some research...

Thanks for the advice!

I'm an indie filmmaker who's been using the AG-DVX100a for the past few years who decided to upgrade to keep up with advancing tech.

I make feature films, music videos and such.

Thx

If you are thinking about HVX200 then conciser Canon XH G1. It's actually sharper then HVX200 (though less color saturated) and personally i prefer that camera over Panasonic. That said though if i had a few thousand at my disposal i would invest in Canon 7D.

RED is such a different price point i don't even want to start that conversation.

When someone makes a post like the OP, and gives ZERO parameters, I am inclined to say what I would purchase. If they say "my budget is *X*, I shoot these kinds of films, I need these kinds of features, what should I be shopping", then I can be of more help.

Who knows he could have just hit the lotto...

Hey

Hey

Hey guys,

Sorry for any inconvenience that I may have caused by keeping my inquiry open-ended. I'm curious what you like, what you use, why you like what you like, what you're saving up for, etc.

I honestly wasn't expecting anyone to tell me "this is the best camcorder there is". I'm doing a lot of research on various camcorders and was curious what you guys had and/or wanted with hopes to expand my research. I intentionally didn't attach a list of preferences and price range so I wouldn't dissuade anyone's opinion.

I have a lot of respect for the dvxuser community. Some of the most brilliant filmmakers I've met are on this board. I am grateful for those who have taken time out of your busy schedule to reply.

Thanks

DadinWestchester,

I have a buddy who owns an EX-1. I must say... very impressive indeed. This is gonna sound silly, but I love the built in lens cover. I wish every camera had that!

Last time I held a sony (1 year or so ago) I noted to myself that it felt like something from toys r us, never looked back. It was one of those midsize (HMC150 esque) HDV jobs. On the flipside the 150's I own feel sturdy and solid, no squaky plasticy sound when I hold it.

PerroneFord,

I've been looking into the RED. Heard a lot of great things about it.

Like everything else, it has it's positives and negatives. You can make movies on a lot of different cameras these days. Some are built for the task, others not so much. The RED is built to make movies with. And it shows.

Yea? Why don't you grab an F950 or an F35 and see what you think...

This makes about as much sense as going to a Chevy dealer and pushing on the skin of a ZR1 and noting it must be worthless because you can push the skin... The value of the camera is on the INSIDE and on the front.

The HMC150 feels like a toy after holding my EX1. So should I conclude your camera is crap?

Hey Sony does plastic and they do it well. They keep the polymer factories in business.

Just making a general statement that the build quality didn't seem to be there last time I looked at Sony. I agree that the internals are very important. But you should also too realize that the build quality is important as well. I expect a camera to perform in many different conditions. I wrote about a DVC-30 a little earlier today (for sale forum) regarding its ruggedness. That little 30 has been to hell and back several times doing ENG as a spare for like I dunno 5 years or so and is still going strong.

My statement was my conclusion that compared to Panasonic's typical frame, it felt very plastic and was not confidence inspiring, don't take it so personal. If you love your camera that much perhaps you should take it to bed with you.

I have a very difficult time not having an allegiance towards one brand or another, it appears this is common in the film community.

When I was doing reserch for my SD camcorder 6 years back everyone raved about the Panasonic DVX100, Canon XL1, and one of the Sony products (sorry, the model escapes me). I was hoping when it came to HD the line was as well defined. It appears there are more great products than ever before.

A few friends, and trusted DVXusers, have suggested the Panasonic HMC150 and Sony V1U camcorders, which are considerably cheaper than the Panasonic HVX200 and Sony EX-1, which are in my price range. If you get what you pay what sacrifices are being made for the cheaper HMC150 and V1U?
