Resample Options

Mark Harris

Pain in the ass
sorry for yet another resample thread, but I did not find the info I needed when searching.

I am working on some SUPER slomo stuff. Are there any more controls over how the resample works other than a radio button? I can't find anything in the prefs. Am I missing something, or is that all you get?

Vegas 8.

You mean the three choices? I don't think there's anything else.

If you're converting from 60i to 24p, you'd want to make sure to set your deinterlace method to Interpolate.

Yeah, I mean more like options like come with the timewarp effect of AE. Like can you control more HOW the interpolation happens, etc.

I don't think it gets any more detailed than those three choices, but I'd be happy if someone corrected me on that.

Yeah, I figured. Thanks. I"m getting pretty good results so far taking 60fps and slowing it down to 50% in AE, letting it interpolate frames, then bringing it into Vegas, and bringing it down 50% again.

Man, what I wouldn't give for a camera that could do 250 FPS on this Timefest shoot! I guess even a RED that does 120 would be a nicer place to start. But I"m pretty happy with this so far. Need to shoot in higher shutter I think to avoid motion blur.

Actually, I don't know why I didn't think of this last night --

Under the Playback Rate for the clip is also the Undersample Rate. Try playing with that.

On a similar note:

Is there a way to accurately mimic a ramped slowmo taking 60p footage and ramping down to 24 fps and therefore looking like normal 24p footage (relatively, anyway) and then ramping back up to 60fps for a 2.5 slowmo effect?
Basically, I'd like to create the effect without having to create synthetic frames throughout the ramp between 24fps (normal speed) and 60p to 24fps (2.5 slowmo).

Maybe this is a specialty type of thing for AE, etc, but I thought it might be possible in Vegas.

You'd do that with a velocity envelope. No, not the same level of control as in AE, but you CAN draw the envelope curve by hand.

Thanks David, I figured it had something to do with velocity envolopes (I'm new to Vegas) but I thought it might be a bit more complicated to do it right.

So do I basically just drop a true 60p clip onto a 24p timeline and set a curve?

Right, but keep in mind that it'll be a bit backwards from what you were saying. To match the 24 fps motion, you'd keep the velocity at 100%; when you render as 24p, it'll be resampled to 24p at 100% speed. To achieve the slo-mo, you'd set a point at which the velocity would be 40%.

The audio will not be ramped with the envelope.

Cool...I'll try this tomorrow, but I still wonder if this is going to simply interpret the footage as 24p and then slow it doing a frame repeat/drop frame sort of look from the 100% 24fps speed?

I'm just hoping it will intelligently drop frames for the 24p look, and then add frames from the original 60p as the speed gets ramped to 40% slowmo.

Thanks again for the help. :)

Pretty good and I think slowed down to at least 300FPS.

dayuum....that's some sloooooooowwwmotion. That did turn out pretty darn good for how much it's slowed down. A little bit of synthy stuff with the hair here and there but still quite impressive.

Very cool.

yeah, HVX 60fps. Tis trus the hair does not play nice. But I am hoping to remedy that with some higher shutter, so that the frames AE has to work with are crisper. And if not, I will just do the actors' hair in such a way I can get away with it.

But it's pretty buttery smooth otherwise.

As long as you have the clip's properties set to "Smart Resample," which it is at default, this is what you should see happen. Vegas does an excellent job at resampling footage.
