Request Critique - Need to Improve Lighting!

Hello, all!

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I suspect it'll get moved if it isn't. ::)

We did a lot of experimenting with lighting for the December contest entry "Bedford Village," and I was not satisfied with the results. The talent and background merge too much, and the overall effect is fairly flat.

I would appreciate any feedback on how to improve the lighting here so I can learn from this! Here's a link to the video again:

For the interior shots, we used 2 Britek 300/600 Watt lights, one on umbrella the other on softbox, one 200 watt Britek, and a china ball with a 60 watt flood in it.

All the outdoor scenes were shot day-for-night with no extra lighting.

Many thanks to anyone who has critique!

Re: Request Critique - Need to Improve Lighting!

Hi Doug

I honestly can't say anything negative about the lighting in this piece. I thought it was nicely and professionally done.

Any .02 I have is:

1. Possible to have any light sources on the EXT NIGHT shots that are more practical in nature? A glowing lantern on a porch or coming through a window? Just to add pop to the Night Scene (Which looks great by the way).

2. Perhaps the use of a flicker in some shots using the candles? And the shot of the young man at the far end of the room looked like more light was on him than would be.

.02 as always; I though you did a great job!

Re: Request Critique - Need to Improve Lighting!

We did our day-for-night in camera.

The camera operator, Brendon Greiser, just plugged in the "DVRack" software, then started fiddling with scene settings until we got it where we wanted it.

I wish we'd written down the settings, but we didn't. I do know we lowered contrast and shifted color temp heavily towards blue. We figured if we wanted to do it again we could simply re-set things using DVRack again.

I thought you did a good job. Occasionaly, I thought in a few shots the lighting was too spotty with some hot spots. (Again, viewing compressed quicktime isn't the greatest way to judge things.)

If you want more speration, you need to have some backlights and/or sources on the background.

I agree you could have added some flicker, but I think it's a darn good job.
