well either way it goes, you have to have a kick ass reel and be able to make prod. companies $! you can also try and get development deals w/ prod. companies as well; b4 they list you on their directors roster. oh yeah the most important factor; CONTACTS!
if your planning on knocking on doors w/ your current reel to MAJOR production companies (mjz, rsa, hsi, @radical media,...) then your wasting your time. even sending demos their way will most likely not get looked at or something along those lines. try getting artist around town and shooting vids for them. or maybe shooting commercials. get more experience and get a kick ass crew together. then find the transition from video to film QUICK! don't forget your competing w/ other directors that shoot film; and professionals know the difference.
im not a signed director; but im trying to get there. so thats my $.02.
For film directing, you would most likely be repped by a literary agent. In this day and age, any indie director better also be a writer, or at the very least have the rights to some good scripts, and a good plan of attack for making a feature.
There are several ways to go: Make a short, market the hell out of it at festivals, get a buzz. Make a feature, do the same thing (only this one you can also try and sell, shorts barely sell for jack). Write a script, enter contests, hustle, schmooze.
Etc.
Basically. Get to know people who know people. I hate to say it, but it's true. Thus often mediocre product but good self-promo and marketing skills will land someone more work whole a truly talented recluse with no social skills will sit around frustrated.
It doesn't hurt to do a lot of research. Know names, whose hot in town, look up past histories of other people who "made it" etc. Make a plan. Stick to it. And ride the long hard wave with no regrets till the end.
yeah being repped for vids and spots are different than features. lit. agents are the way to go. but you can always rep yourself! make a kick ass short, screen it,... then make a feature, get offers or distribute it yourself!
You gotta have a kick-ass reel - period. Your body of work has gotta look and be done as good or better than your competition. You might not have the connections or the luck to meet the right people right away, but when it does happen, you'll have a reel ready to blow them away.
show stuff on the net...if you have something new and cool, upload it and show it around forums like dvxuser, dvinfo, mvwire...there is nothing wrong with sending it to production companies...i dont think it is a wast of time...i would plaster the dvd cover with the best images from that vid and send it in...if it really is bad ass...u never know...
if you work in the industry...try and get it seen by people you work with...you never know who someone might know...
just dont be anoying or a prick...so many people have these wierd egos or are relly pushy...it turns people off...being cool and down to earth helps...
dna is the shiitte...its working out very well...they rock. just did that dashboard vid and am writing on a pretty big name rap artist now...we shall see. its goodtimes.
