Replacing Text on Street Sign

Hi guys.

I shot some footage of a street sign for a project I'm working on. I want to replace the text on the sign with other text in AE CS4. Any ideas or tutorials you guys could suggest would be GREATLY appreciated.

I assume I will need to use motion tracking to keep the new text on the sign, but what would be the best way to remove the text that was already there?

I can post sample footage of the street sign I shot later tonight if that would help get a better idea of what the conditions were.

Thanks in advance.

You'll likely have to do some motion tracking. It would help to see the shot you're trying to fix though. From that it will be easier to tell what the best way to tackle it would be.

To cover the old text you could use a solid, though it will stand out as a bit clean. You could do this a bit better by taking a high res still of the sign and cutting out a clean section in PS and use that. Add some blur. Maybe even layer a similarly coloured solid over the top and use screen mode. Youll need to tweak it so the overlay with new text blends naturally into the sign itself.

@triple: Thanks for the tip about mocha. I didn't realize I had it. I've been reading up on it all night as well as checking out a few tutorials. i don't have much experience with it but I'm sure I'll be able to pick it up pretty quickly. How would you go about replacing the text as described in the first post using mocha. Thanks in advance.

@Noel: Thanks. Using the solid was what I was originally thinking, but like you said it would prob stand out. I'm not a pro in PS but I will try to see if I can make that work...hopefully using Mocha.

After watching your clip I would indeed use a solid that matched the near by colors with a hint of grain on it. Then the text on top of course.

Tracking through the speed ramp will be tough. You might want to just track the motion before and after that camera move, then keyframing the layers manually through that move since it happens so quickly.

Removing the text from the end of the shot shouldn't be a problem since the sign is underexposed and dark. You can probably just use a solid. For the first part of the shot, you can probably mask out a still frame of the sign and use the clone tool to paint over the text. You can do that in either photoshop or AE.
