As I was directing a Japanese beer commercial in San diego, I had Bruce Logan shoot the commercial for me, we had a discussion about film...being replaced by digital...He said its getting near...what is your opinion about this...... :o

Re: Replacing film?

my impression is that film is still the best capturing method available, resolution wise. but it's matter of time until they would find an affordable and easy way to capture digitally. some say that on the other side of the process (i.e digital screening) things are evolving even faster than expected... so let's give it another decade until digital will fully establish itself.
what even more interesting to me is the low-end indy making and how it benefits from the new affordable technology, because the high-end 35mm productions, even if they would replace film with digital, they wouldn't really change the actual approach of cinematography.. you can't throw away 100 years of film-making.. so does it really matter if the image is being captured onto film or into a hard-disk... dont think it does.

oh.. the only thing is though.. the digital post production replacing the traditional color grading.. now that's a one big step forward in the workflow of cinematography IMHO..
