Replacement stands?

We've got a decent all around light kit but the stands are kind of flimsy and we want to replace them.

What are decent lighting stands? Are standard C-stands the answer and do C-stands come with the generic lighting tip?

I searched through the posts and all I found were a couple of people talking about getting good stands but failed to mention any specific types or sources. Thanks.

Re: Replacement stands?

I would seriously invest in some C-Stands. This is the answer and are still used in the industry after all these years. They are like the perfect design. There are different brands available on the same thing.

Now for some trivia:

What does the 'C' stand for?

Re: Replacement stands?

Century.

C-stands are what you want -- especially with arms & heads. For general purpose use you might want to get a mix of 20" risers and 40" risers. Common brands are Matthews, American, and Avenger. Prices for new ones range from about $120 to about $160, and EVS and B&H both carry 'em. They're heavy and big, so shipping is expensive.

If you can find used ones, do it -- they basically never wear out, and no matter how banged-up they get, they will still work great. But finding used ones isn't that easy, specifically because of those reasons: once someone's got them, there's no reason to sell 'em, they just continue working and working.

And yes, the top of a C-stand is a 5/8" baby spud, the standard light attachment.

Re: Replacement stands?

Yeah, buy some C-stands, but get some medium kit stands or something as well.

Although C-stands are certainly capable of holding a light, they are more commonly used to hold flags, gel frames, nets, silks, boom poles, foam core and... of course... lights. But usually only when you need to rig one in way that would require the use of a C-stand.

Point is... I only have three C-stands and I don't want to tie one up with merely supporting a light if another stand could do the job.

There's nothing like having a great idea to rig or mount something while between takes only to realize your C-stands are all tied up doing things other stands should be doing... (holding a light).

Also, C-stands don't have a very wide footprint compared to most light stands and... (if neither were properly secured)... the C-stand would be more likely to topple.

Re: Replacement stands?

Yeah.. C-stands have remained the same for the last Century (pun).. and now they are starting to make them with removable foldup legs so they pack a little easier.. but its borderline gimicy.

Terry.. you can still buy a good medium grade light stand, bogen makes a decent one. There is nothing wrong with using them, and almost all light kits come with them. Just in the movie world, little lights are almost always heald up with C-Stands, and as Barry said, they will probally last longer than I will.
