Replacement Bogen 503 Legs?

Long story, but I have a busted set of "sticks" on my Bogen Manfrotto 503. I'm not sure if I can fix it (a locking mechanism snapped off and it can't extend) and I'm not mechanically inclined. Any suggestions on a fixit? Otherwise would it seem wise to just remove the otherwise flawless head and place it on a new legs? Are there any other legs rather than the 503's original that would also be a good choice? Thanks!

I've never used it, but maybe the 547B would be a good replacement? It can only carry 33 lbs compared to the 351M's 44 but it comes with a mid level spreader and it's a good deal lighter, 5 lbs as opposed to 8 lbs.
If you don't like that one , just do a search at B&H.
