repairing some BAD footage

It looks like I'm stuck with some pretty bad VHS footage taped off of TV in the early 80's. (it seems most small news channels don't keep tapes prior to '84) I captured into fcp using a pro s-vhs player with TBC, but still not so great. I tried just about every FCP video filter (bezier, etc.) and soundtrack pro noise reducer. The bezier control helped with brightness, but the buzz was not helped at all by noise reducer. Basically, the problem is that the image is overexposed, there is shearing, and the sound is crackly and buzzy. These are not problems with the source tape, but instead ones that developed over time, I assume. Any thoughts?

Try the Hum Remover in FCP for the Buzz. If sound is crackly and buzzy, do you mean like it's from old, worn out VHS tape? That's not going to fix, it's there. For over exposed footage, I'd work with the 3-Way Color Corrector to start with. What version of FCP are you running?

I actually address this type of issue in the April '07 installment of my Cut Lines column in Event DV magazine. PM me.
