Repair Permissions...

Is repair permissions the same thing as trashing preferences? I am right in the middle of a project, is it ok to do either/or of these If I need to?

No -- Yes.

Repair permissions is a function of Disk Utility. Trashing preferences is something you have to do manually.

Either are fine to do in the middle of a project, BUT -- you will loose your window set-ups and any favorites you might have in effects or transitions.

Repair Permissions: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Find your boot drive click it and select repair permissions. Do it twice.

I do have an effect that I have saved that took me 3 hours to complete. How can I save it somewhere else if it is going to delete my favorites?

You could try right clicking it and opeining in editor. Save the file as a text file and reimport when done.

Unless this is a non FCP plugin -- you might run into problems there.
