renting vs. buying?

If I was shooting a feature film only on weekends, would it make more sense to rent a camera, or buy one?

Most rental houses rent you gear on Friday before 3pm, and if you return it by Monday at 11am its considered a one day rental. At least, every rental house I've been to works like that. I guess it really depends what kind of cam you're buying or renting.

Not enough info, too many variable.

Budget, camera, distribution, etc.

IMHO I would buy the gear. It allows you to shoot whenever you need to and however long you need to without having to worry about picking up and returning the gear every time. One of the biggest problems I've seen with weekend shoots is having the time to get all the shots you need without rushing. You won't have to compromise your film. You can also sell the gear when you are done and/or rent it out if need be...as well as writing it off if you turn it into a business. One thing you can do is write several scripts then shoot multiple films in a row so it makes it much more economical to buy your gear. Be patient...this is a marathon not a sprint.
