Renting Out My Gear

I've been asked many times if a friend or stranger (friend of a friend, but stranger to me) can rent gear from me. I've got quite a bit these days--lots of lenses, FS100 and 5D MK3, which seem to be rent-bait. I'm willing to rent some stuff out, I just want to insure that everything is by the books, so if something goes wrong, I'm not screwed.

I've been cruising through all the forums I know, and I'm still at a loss. Does anyone know where to start?

Contracts?

Insurance?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you answered your own question. I would also call a rental company, one that rents gear and such. Ask them what you need to rent, or even go rent something, then read the contract, set it up the same way.

I would suggest the first test would be whether it is something you have the ability to replace. Otherwise you're all in with everything to lose.

maranfilms, yes I think I have those elements down, I just don't know the 'how' aspect. I suppose just go to any insurance agent and ask them questions about coverage? I've downloaded some of the 'contracts' out there, I just wonder how legally binding they are (if at all).

egg born son, I completely agree. My A kit is an FS100, but it looks like this person wants to rent my 5DMK3. I assume they're coming to me (friend of a friend) to look for a deal (which I'm okay with, I'd love to make money off the gear). I can't go out with the gear now because I'm booked. I had read in some other forums and articles that getting a safety deposit for the full worth of the gear replacement is typical. Does that sound right? And what do I do, just hold on to it until they get me the gear back?
