Renting out equipment ...

Greetings all,

My wife and I are taking the splurge and getting a pretty nice base set up for making documentary films. My question to you all is whether or not you rent out your equipment to help make it pay for itself or not.

Any thoughts on this?

And, if you do rent out your equipment, what process do you go through to insure that it doesn't get messed up?

Also, if this has already been a thread item ad infinitum, please just direct me to the thread and only deliver a light spanking.

Thanks,

Kevin.

renting gear

Hi Kevin,

I have owned a dvx100a for 2 years. I shoot short films and documentaries. I paid for it by shooting ( gulp!) weddings ( 4 of them). I also set up an LLC company and secured insurance for all of my gear and myself. I now rent my camera package out to other shooters THAT I KNOW AND TRUST ( I work with 4 of them). I'm sure that others will have their own ideas on what you should and should not do, but if you take the proper steps to protect yourself and your investment, there's no reason why it shouldn't make money for you.

good luck!

Thanks for the input. Could you give me more info on how you insured your equip and yourself?

We are in the process of setting up a non-profit that we will be doing our doc projects out of, but we are debating the non-profit versus profit status issues.

Thanks,

Kevin.
