rendering without letterbox

hey guys, i was wondering how to render your movie without the black bars on top and bottom, so that the frame size would be smaller and thus make the file smaller. i've seen this all he time for movie trailers, but i don' know how to do it.

anybody have any prefernces for rendering all together? i have a 14 min short film that i want to keep as good as quality as possible while still having a reasonable download size.

Crop for 16:9, output at 480x270 or thereabouts. (You may have to adjust for the different formats available. Some like multiples of 16, some don't care.) "Stretch to fill frame" when rendering.

You can adjust the sizes....just keep it proportional.

Oh. You probably won't see a whole lot of difference in filesize, though. The compression algorithms are such that constant black bars contribute almost nothing to the final output, anyway.

Here's another option, use divx doctor to render. It has the option that you can crop out the letterbox.

I convert my 4:3 videomaterial to 16:9 dvd with Vegas for my movie projects and get good results:
1. create a 16:9 project in Vegas
2. import the 4:3 video and put in on the timeline
3. rightclick on the video on the timeline and check Switches:make sure the Maintain Aspect Ratio option is not marked
4. add the widescreen letterboxing to the video, using the Pan/Crop tool for each videosegment; with the Pan/Crop tool you have some vertical headroom to choose the best widescreen framing within the 4:3 video
5. after editing, render the timeline to an 16:9 Widescreen MPEG2 file. Make sure you use the Best Quality setting, the Variable Bitrate and 2 Pass options for best quality.

I'm sure step 5 is the same, even when you choose an other format like .MOV or .WMV.
