Rendering to 1080p / uprezing help

Hey all, I have some questions that hopefully you can help me with.

#1. What is the best file format to encode 1080p content to play exclusively from a computer? I have been trying to encode a bunch of different things to 1080 30p using different codecs from Vegas and am not seeing great results. Hard drive space is not an issue.

#2. What's the best way to uprez SD content into a 1080p format?

#3. When using Raylight and Vegas, what project settings should I be using for DVCPRO HD to produce 1080 24/30p?

Thanks
Kit

1. Using Sony AVC's encoder: h.264 at 9.5 mbps with CAVLC entropy coding (easier decoding, especially for Quicktime), AAC audio, .mp4 container. Works with PS3 and XBoX360 too.

2. I wouldn't suggest you do so. Just export at 874x480 at h.264/AAC at 3 mbps. If you must mix and match SD and HD in timeline, make sure your project properties reflect your HD's content properties.

3. No idea, I don't use that codec, I'll leave that for Jim.

Well, if drive space isn't an issue, the best quality will be uncompressed. If you're going to go to h.264, which isn't a bad choice, I'd strongly suggest MainConcept's AVC encoder over Sony's any time. More options, usually better results.

But DVCPRO HD is better-quality.

The best way to uprez SD is to use an external program like DVFilm Maker or Magic Bullet. But you can do it with Vegas by rendering as 1080. You may not find the result satisfactory, however.

For DVCPRO HD, I'm not sure what you're asking -- are you wanting 1080 24p, or 1080 30p? Or both?

If you want 24p, use the settings as described on this page, changing the frame size to 1920x1080:

However, 30p is not supported.

Thanks, but I don't have much of a choice. I have to do it, so I am looking for the best way.

I was just making sure that I wouldn't do a 1440 x 1080, things are starting to jumble togetehr in my head. But thanks.

It seemed like 30p was ok as long as I put it in as a custom value, just changed the frame rate to 29.976. Is this bad? Does it not really do 30p? What I am looking to do is to shoot, edit and output to 1080 30p most of the time. I may adjust this if it's truly not supported.

Thanks

If it worked for you, then hey. :) But I haven't gotten it to work for me, and I wouldn't trust it to work every time. (Another reason I've been using Premiere Pro CS3 for 1080 DVCPRO stuff.)
