Rendering Time 1.5 -> 2.0

Question for you experts out there.

I recently got a copy of premier pro 2.0 and have been having a tough time learning the new color correction filters and all that. Im just now starting to get the hang of using the level bar instead of contrast, pedestal, gamma, rgb gain and so on.

But here is the question.

I tried importing about a minutes worth of footage, one layer of fast color correction for the saturation and levels, and another layer of RGB corrector, for the colors.

The amount of time it took to render this one minute segment in pp 2.0 was about 20-25 minutes.

I achieved the same look with only one filter in premier pro 1.5, and the footage was able to render in minutes.

I am running a

Core 2 duo, 2.00 ghz
2 gigs of ram at 667 mhz
100 gig HD 7200 rpm
and a 512 mg Quatro graphix card.

Im running a strong computer here, but whats with the huge difference in rendering times?

I have a slightly higher performance machine than yours and didn't encounter the same massive rendering time increases when I jumped from 1.5 to 2.0 last summer. The aspect of your machine that seems a bit curious to me is the size of the HD; 100GB is pretty small. This isn't a notebook is it?

I use a pair of 750GB SATA drives and a number of external drives (either USB 2.0 or 1394 connected). Premiere doesn't do well with the application, OS, data and scratch disc on the same drive. I would recommend that you try spreading the data and render work space to different drives and test again.

For a notebook based NLE, I wouldn't advise going the PPro 2.0 route as it does have higher requirements (I keep 1.5.1 on my notebook, but 2.0 on my desktops). If you must, try the idea of adding a pair of external drives for data and work space, it should give you a bit of improvement.

i am knowledged in the area of computers, but can you please explain to me why running pp 2.0 on a laptop versus a desktop would create any kind of difference.... This does not make any sense to me..

my laptop is quite stacked with gear.

Hi Papa

I agree with khmuse advise exept that I believe powrfull laptops work just fine with PPro2.
My laptop is P4 3.6 and I am running PPro2 without a problem. I use CineForm Aspect HD thought. I get real time color corection with their tool and no need for rendering ! But anyhow PPro 2 and your laptop will co exist just fine in any case.... expept if you keep working with one internal HD only ! I have RAID0 internal for OS/programs and 2 external firewire for my media. But I am going to get 2 more SATA and work via PCMCIA adapter. There are times that I need the extra mbs when keying and dealing with 2-4 streams plus still images. Try external HD and tell us what happened.

i will, but right now the question is why is the rendering time such a drastic difference on a Great machine between two versions of premier pro.

I only had crazy rendering times when I had accidently the wrong video settings. Try double cheking that. Can't thing anything else for your problem, sorry.

where are the techies at??!!

can someone refer me to someone who is techy savy here?

The data buss for the video path in most notebooks has much less bandwidth then an equivalent (processor speed equivalent) desktop machine. Notebooks also employee a number of power saving techniques (for both battery preservation and for a reduction of the thermal load) that reduces their effective performance. Most of the bench mark tests fail to fully reveal these differences, but a test of a processor speed equivalent desk top machine will easily reveal the real world difference in an NLE application.

well then whats wit hthe drastic difference between 1.5 and 2.0 ?

why am i getting super sick rendering times in 1.5 ( 3 layers of effects, CC, magic bullet, and sharpening) on 2 mins of footage, i can rendering 5 mins.

wuts going on 2,0!!

The horse power requirements (and assumption of) for 2.0 are notably higher than 1.5.X was. Just the nature of the two different versions of the application. Your situation isn't unique, it parallels mine; as I mentioned, I keep 1.5.1 on my notebook but use 2.0 on my desktops.
