Rendering techniques/tips for AE?

Does anyone know of some render streamline tips/tricks/techniques for AE's renderer. I know about all the standard draft, best, etc, I'm looking for something a little more in depth on how to wrangle the best renders from AE while maintaing quality, especially for the web. Here are my two scenarios that have frustrated me:

1. I did a 15 second motion graphic PSA, 3-4 nested comps and 5-6 additional layers, no sound, only a few effects. The elements are mostly text, with a photo and some other simple artwork. When I render out a DVCPRO50 QT, the text looks like crap and the quality is pretty bad, plus it's a pretty big file. Any insight? Maybe some caveats with the codec in AE?

2. I put together a quick little ad reel last night and rendered out a 3/4 scale H.264 QT and the size came out to around 20MB. The video was about 45 seconds long, 10-12 layers with some nested comps. I'm not sure if it's AE, but when I do renders out of Shake, they look really good and come out fairly small.

Any insight?

I use Divx. But I have noticed that AE can be a bit hinky when trying to render not only Quicktime, but anything needing real compresion. With DivX I get good results with suprisingly small sizes, and it can be used by Mac as well.

One, why don't you render it out Uncompressed or with a lossless codec and then use Shake, Vegas, or whatever you want to encode for the web?

By the by, I've never been able to get the h.264 codec to come out well, though I have seen many awsome clips encoded with it.

Sorenson 3 is gonna make a huge file, when set to "Best" quality, it's even larger than DV. 4.2 - 4.5 megs per second.

I use flash, or wmv. I render uncompressed and then I compress it for the web, or sometimes I just re-render the final render for the web.-because it is a lot faster in most of the cases

I always render out of AE full quality uncompressed files. Then, I can compress those down to whatever delivery medium I need in a program more suited for compression (like Cleaner).

Thanks guys for the tips, I'm seeing that umcompressed is the way to go. I'll have to look into a compression program for getting the quality I want in the sizes I expect.

I've never used that program. How good is it, and would you recommend it, and why?

Ya cleaner is great. It has more options than compressor and you can setup some nice batches. It's the option we use if something's not going to be hardware encoded. Dload the demo and give it a shot.
