rendering in Vegas 12 questions

ugh...i hate to ask, but i figure you all can enlighten me.

Filming 1080i/24p with the HVX200a.

Rendering to both blu ray and DVD.... Here's what i'm doing, but i dont think it's right...

For Blu Ray, i take each .VEG file and render it down to Mainconcept AVC Blu Ray1920x1080, 24p, 25mbps
i then assemble them into one single file and render that as m2v same settings. I have pixel at 8 bit, and deinterlace as "blend"
i dont nest the VEG files, as for some reason it seems to mess up Vegas 12 (and my computer is good enough to handle the workload), but it goes into "shock" when i drop in like my 3rd or 4th .VEG file.

For DVD, it's the same format, but i render each individual file to MPEG-2 24p DVD architect widescreen, and then assemble them into a timeline and render as an Mpeg.

I know this isnt right,... my blu ray i just rendered was really choppy, and some of my downcranked scenes were jerky. My DVD is fine, but the picture quality stinks.

all audio i render as Dolby AC-3 pro.

As i said earlier, i have to do it this way as Dropping the VEG files into a timeline isnt quite working...? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much in advance!

Because Vegas 12 doesn't remove pulldown from P2 footage, don't render as 24p and don't deinterlace. Render as 60i. By deinterlacing and rendering to 24p, you're making two layers of mess of the footage.

So, ditch anything that says 24p, put none for deinterlacing... everything else seem ok? Thanks so much for your help...i kinda figured you would know!!!

Yeah, you really don't want to edit or render the footage as 24p until Vegas is able to remove the pulldown. Just treat it as 60i (which means shooting as 24p, not 24pA).

Gotcha... i originally did all of my editing in 11, but upgraded to 12, made the mistake of saving one VEG file in 12, and now need to change a few things....ugh.

For DVD to architect, should i be sending an MPEG for architect? My DVD's just didnt look "clear" to me for some reason....

rendered each file as MPEG-2, compiled them and then set them up as MPEG for architect.

THanks so much, David!!!

So, i guess i'm just giving up.... i have everything rendered as stated above to AVC, which i would have rendered down for architect, but there's some shots that i have stretched out for "slow motion," and after i render (to AVC) those particular shots are choppy as all get out. It's probably just me, but Vegas 12 is maddening, and now i'm stuck unable to really do anything with this project. I tried importing back to 11, but i have a ton of FX that are in each shot that have been resized, repositioned, etc in the timeline, that doesnt transfer over (i guess) to vegas 11's timeline when i copy and paste. GRRR...thanks for the help, Dave.

Doing slo-mo with 24p footage is ALWAYS choppy -- that's not a Vegas issue; that's an issue with not having enough pictures per second to do a smooth slow-down. What you need to do is shoot the parts you want to slow down at a faster frame rate.

For future reference, with the HVX, you could have shot at 720/24pN and used variable frame rates for your slo-mo. Then, you'd be able to cut on a 24p timeline with no problem, and the slo-mo would have been slowed down for you in the camera and recorded as 24p, pre-slowed.

yeah, i got ya with that, it's just more "jerky" in 12 than my render i had with 11... weird.

one last question here, in architect, now that i've rendered everything as 60i interlaced, do i set my properties in architect as interlaced as well? not progressive, right?

There's nothing to set. The file is interlaced; DVD Architect won't change it if it's a DVD-compliant file, which it will be if you used the DVD Architect template.

Any settings in DVD Architect only affect what happens if DVD Architect re-renders something, or renders menu screens.

A DVD can have both progressive and interlaced files on it. You're not stuck with one or the other.
