None of the two. I personally prefer h.264 because it offers the best quality/filesize ratio. WMV is not too bad though. Regarding .avi, it's just a container. You don't want to be exporting in the default .avi intermediate codec, but instead on mpeg-4 xdiv/dvix .avi.

You see, the .avi (just like .mov and .mp4) is a container format that can "host" many different encoding formats, while .wmv is mostly an actual encoding format. Each time you need to specify which encoding format you want to use inside your .avi or .mp4 or .mov.

The way I export to youtube my own footage is: 1 MBps 480x270 h.264 .mp4 video with 128 kbps AAC audio. I upload that to youtube (it comes out really nice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXLWMxmQ_84 ), and then I also offer that actual .mp4 file to my viewers, which is usually iPod/PSP/iPhone compatible.

wmv is the most popular web format. Remmeber that quicktime codecs are a lil finicky. Wmv is a codec and a format. Wmv will somewhat soften the look of your video (depending on how much compression you use). Ive just seen that a lot of mp4 clips wont run on some machines. I myself downloadedsome mp4 clips. Wont run on my machine or my friends either. wmv will have a very wide compatibility factor.

WMV is not the most popular web format. It is the most "trouble free" format because 95% of people have Windows, but it's not as popular among publishers. In fact, most directors on a forum like this mostly export in h.264.
