Rendering annoyance

As the title states, this is merely an annoyance, I can easily work around it but if there's any way I could fix the "problem" I'd be happy. I always keep a blank sequence open just for exporting individual clips to send to people, rather than exporting entire sequences and in the end just wasting tons of time and hard drive space. But for some reason, whenever I go to do certain types of renders for clips in this sequence, like rendering only "full", or "preview", it just doesn't do it. It opens up the progress display window and it immediately goes to 100 percent and closes, and the clips don't get rendered. But when I go to render all and click video or both, it works fine. Any suggestions?

Simple fix - you must change your sequence real time playback from 'unlimited' to 'safe'. Top left button on the timeline. Then you can select a portion of the timeline and render just that section.

I find when that happens (at least for "render only needed"), I've accidentally highlighted a transition or small clip. If you deselect the highlighted material, FCP will render everything that needs it.
