Rendering all the Time?

Hi guys, very very new to FCP, using FCP Studio 5.1.3 and I'm just going through the training DVD but... on the training DVD, the clips are played back & forth okay... but every time I do anything to the timeline I have to render before I can view any clip? Any ideas? Thanks!

You need to match your sequence settings with the type of clip you're putting in it.
For example if the clips are dv ntsc, your sequence setting needs to be dv ntsc.
