Rendering 1080 60 - Help

Help!

I tried to search this topic, but could not find anything.

I have some work shot on a Sony ( I know.....) Anyway, it was shot in 1080 60i. I captured the footage via a dec. I created a new project in Vegas 7 (1080 60i) - Footage looks good and even edit's ok. I am testing out my render options and I'm running into issues. If I render (AVI 1080 60i intermediate) when I play it back, it jumps around and skips and does not play smooth. If I render it in standard NTSC DV it plays ok, but it does not appear to be in HD.

Bottom line....I need help. Any of you out there have any good render stories w/ 1080-60 from Vegas?

Also, the purpose of of this job is to send clips to a client who is going to re-cut (not sure on what edit system) the clips into something that fits their program. Any suggestions on smooth transition for this?

What you experience is normal. It seems that you think that Vegas' AVI is DivX or something. It ain't. It is usually intermediate codecs meant for editing/archiving, not for viewing.

You need to export in h.264 or WMV for viewing purposes.

Thanks for the response.

I did try it WMV and it works...just doesn't look good to me. What is h.264?

And what do you think is the best way to send clips to a client so they can re-edit? Un-compressed AVI?

>What is h.264?

It's the .mp4 files created out of the Sony AVC or Main Concept filetypes. You will have to press "custom" and customize the export though.

> Un-compressed AVI?

If they have Vegas installed too, send them all the project files. If they don't, send them .m2t or Cineform (depending what their editor supports), or as a last resort, uncompressed.

Thanks so much. The mp4 looks good.

Quick question though on .m2t. They are editing on FC. This isn't readable on an FC edit is it?

If they are editing on FC then export an uncompressed QT file. If they want it in 1080, this file is going to be HUGE! How long is the movie you are trying to export?

It's a series of short clips like 5 minutes and some that are 10 minutes. I was thinking the uncompressed QT myself. And I know, it makes a huge file. Problem is, once I make it, I don't know how to get it to them.

I think I"m going to just render back to tape and go that route. So, another question, the footage was shot in 1080 60. Can I render back in SD DV? Or do i have to render back to HD DV?

Nick

You can render into anything you want. But whatever you render is is all they are going to get. So if you render that 1080 to SD, you're now going to have 480i and you can't get the 1080 back.

I've been working on a project between a mac user and myself on Vegas. What we have done is to buy a 750GB external drive, and format it for Mac. Then I got a copy of Macdrive 7 which lets me read it and write to it just fine. This way, I can deal with the hours of 1080p files I need to, and render uncompressed so he can use them in FC.
