Render Torture Test

If you're bored over the weekend and have a half an hour to kill, you might want to try a new rendertest for benchmarking. With the speed of new systems ripping the old benchmarks to shreds, we're curious to see what happens with the new systems, and have created a much more robust (and painful) render test.
As folks mail us with their results, we'll post them.

http://www.vasst.com/?v=render_test_2006.htm

Warning-if you have a slower, older computer, proceed at your own risk. Even on the fastest newer single proc systems, this render test will take approximately 15 minutes to render. This test is geared heavily towards the HDV user.

Fast or slow, let us know how your system fares.

thanks for taking the time to make this!
my current setup is good for my editing uses at the moment, however, i can see that im going to need a hardware upgrade when i switch to HDV.
i wonder if replying to this post implies im bored this weekend?

I was going to respond, but my ancient system's still running the test. 2 hours and counting... :)

(looks like a dual 4400 is in my immediate future!)

Hmmm, I'll test it out when I get to my other system, which is actually pretty good, though I currently run everything off of one RAID setup (OS, everything), which I'm sure will have a huge negative impact on me ... probably is THE major thing I need to change in the near future.

The creaking ancient system finally finished. 5:00:09. Yes, Spot opened this with "have a half an hour to kill" and said "Even on the fastest newer single proc systems, this render test will take approximately 15 minutes to render." Bah. Pentium 4, 2.66ghz, 1gb RAM, took almost exactly five hours.

The new one-week-old laptop, Pentium M 760 2.00 GHz, was faster, but not dramatically so -- it took four hours and nine minutes! So, um, that "half an hour" -- where do I sign up?

Surprising. I assumed you were running some kind of "bend - light - change time" - system!
No, I'm waiting to see how HVX editing solutions shake out, and figure out which NLE to go with on which platform, and once that's all figured out I shall then commence the light-bending! Until then I continue to hobble along...

nice to know your a mere mortal just like the rest of us.

p.s. i cant get my quantum computer to boot windows, any advice?

For me, it was tracking to be done in 28 minutes, until it hit some memory which "could not be read" and shut down Vegas. I'll have to look at my system (still working on some tweaks; it's a new assemble) to make sure everything's optimized, then have another go . . .

Okay, after reading through the thread on the Vegas forum, I don't feel so bad now -- seems like lots of systems are having trouble completing the render, and those that did were in the four to 10 hour range! And don't be fooled by those "will be done in 28 minutes" reports -- right around the 75% mark it runs into some NASTY stuff to render -- Spot wasn't kidding when he called it a "torture test", there's mega motion blur, etc; it was taking for-ever to get through that section!

Even so, it's enough to get me looking at that dual-core 4400, or whatever will be out in a month!

I can't believe you guys are doing this :) I already have enough crap to render and I already hate it. Why would you want to wait around for a test that you know is going to take forever. I guess i can speak easy as I know my 2.4 P4 no hyperthreading would probably be in the 10-15hr range, so I have no desire whatsoever to try it out. :) But to those of you who do, thanks for putting my 2 year old system to shame. You guys are like those video game guys that state proudly, oh yeah, well I got Doom 3 to run at 500fps, take that :)
