Render Times in Premiere Pro CS3 -- is this normal?

I'm am trying to render 20 minutes of my SD Feature film so that people can look at it and start to give me some feedback on it online. However, this render is taking approximately 18 hours.

Yes, *18 hours* of rendering for 20 minutes selected workspace of footage. [It's already been going all night and has another 4 hours to go.]

My system is this:
Dell Dimension 4700 P4 3.0GHz with HT
4GB RAM [Maximum for a Dimension 4700]
Premiere Pro CS3
External USB 2.0 Seagate Freeagent 500GB drive [video files located here]
ASUS GeForce 8400 Video Card 256MB

I haven't done a lot, I don't think, to the footage. I mean, yes, there's lots of cuts... from one scene to the next... and I do have background music playing as a long loop throughout... but 18 hours? Is this normal?

My export settings are these, using Adobe Media Encoder:
Custom Preset:
H.264
720x480
Square pixels
29.97 frame rate
Noise Reduction 6
VBR 1 pass
Audio: AAC 64MHz

Expected file size: ~ 120MB

Any advice would be helpful....

Thanks.

im amateur ... but i think its noise reduction ... some noise reductions can be significantly slow .... and also better will be render first to uncompressed or same format you worked with (DV?) ... because then you will render these extremely slow whatever things just once ... and you can convert it to whatever you want then really fast .... another good thing i guess is to test render time when such a filters are used by rendering for example 10 seconds first and then doing the math to guess full render time

also your using an external USB drive which isnt optimal for video editing or rendering at all. you should really transfer the files to an internal or faster external drive for better performance .. if you have any effects applied to the footage it could certainly be those causing longer times though. and as said above runing noise reduction is going to slow things down in transcoding.
