Render Time

Rendering two camera event with some colour correction and audio FX in Vegas Pro 8.
Using NLE since version 2.0.
This project runs 1:10.
Approaching hour 16 of rendering.
Been a while since I've done a long format job like this.
Does the render time seem UNreasonable to you.
I've experienced long render times on shorter projects, but the reason there was Magic Bullet, and I've come to expect that.
Is it time for a new NLE or a new computer?

Is there Magic Bullet on this one?

What are you rendering FROM (video type) and what are you rendering TO?

This topic is hitting close to home. Normally all I do is short corporate projects... 10 minute videos or less. Recently I've had to do 2 different 1 hour videos and I was really surprised at the time required to render it out.

Timeline is 23.976 with footage shot in 24PA... rendering out to mpeg-2 (for DVD) and WMV (for web) and MOV (for web). Rendering times are floating around 3 hours. I have some graphic elements like animated lower thirds and simple titles... plus on some videos I adjust contrast and color correct. Still... I'm a little shocked at the render times on these longer videos.

I'm using Vegas 6 on a P4 3g w/ 2gigs of ram... and a 6800gt-oc video card... all in an Intel 865 board. After this last project I've been asking myself the same question... if it's time to upgrade or just build a new machine. I pulled up the task box just to see what was happening and the cpu usage is floating between 60-90 percent during the render... with an average in the middle... about 70%.

I had the same system, Mattin, and got comparable results on similar projects. Usually 15 minute projects take from 1 to 2 hours to render for the type of project that I do (lots of subtitles, graphic overlays, CC, etc).

Recently I got a 2.4 quadcore and overclocked it to 3 GHz -- much better! :) I've been rendering old projects just for a laugh.

You also might want to avoid the WMV codec if you can. It´s very very slow in Vegas. Sony’s h.264 AVC is much much faster.

Matt, those times don't seem too out there. My P4 2.8 is roughly in the same ball park.

Remember too, that Vegas makes no use of your video card at all.

Yeah... I know that Vegas isn't using the video card... but on these larger projects I really am stunned at the render times. I used to be able to do these little short crappy posted video examples of stuff... like a vidled or a microphone... and I could just grab a chunk off a timeline and it would render in minutes... even if the clip itself was minutes... like real time for time render out. That was on the same version of Vegas and on the same machine. It seems like all I have to do is add a couple titles or whatever... and sluggo kicks in.

I may be ready for an upgrade... I would like to hear what the render times tend to be on higher spec machines... as opposed to simply "improved"... so how much improvement? Numbers man! Gimme' numbers!

My old editing machine was a 2.0g pentium and 1 gig of 800 rambus... and it had a Canopus Raptor card in it (and a dual head matrox display card that was only about $75)... and honestly... with the new computer and much higher spec across the board... I don't know that I gained hardly anything. I thought that we were beyond dedicated cards... and that's what I really want to know. On a current high-spec machine... does Vegas run a little closer to RT? I'm thinking that rather then upgrade my current computer... that I may build a nice little screamer that ONLY runs Vegas on external drives.

I have an overclocked Quad Core and I notice a huge difference from my last computer. P4 3.2. It is night and day. I am normally a bang for the buck person and a quad core is not a good bang for the buck compared to dual core, but in the case of rendering...it is not a question.....get the most power you can afford in your processor. I am very glad I got the quad core and overclocked it. I have never tried network rendering although I have 4 computers at my home, and some of my friends that do SFX work usually do their work at home and for their higher end clients they send them to locations that specialize in rendering. (rendering farms).

I run a P4, 3.2 ghz, 2 gig ram...render times for a 10min 1080i HDV project (rendering out to .mt2) is around 2 1/2 hours. pretty average if you ask me.

3-5 min vids usually run between 45min - hour and 1/2.

sinfear --- im planning on upgrading to a new system...do you have a comparable project render with you quad-core?

On my new system (quadcore), rendering to DV with simple cuts and titles is faster than real-time.

Same project in HD is about 2X real-time.

Adding alpha-channels and master-effects adds another 2X to the render.

Here is some numbers that i got from a the sonyvegas forum, it is a HDV rendertest:

"21:38 on my ancient 2.8 GHz. Pentium P4 using 7.0d."
"18:10 on my 4 year old 3.06 GHz HT Pentium running 7.0e"
"6:14 on AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ with Vegas 7e"
"4:00 on Core 2 Duo E6700 2 Gb Ram "
"2:13" Q6600, 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM

Check this thread for all the numbers.
