Render Settings - Quick Question

I have decided that when working with HD footage, rendering as Sony AVC/AAC (or whatever it is) works best. I get file sizes around 20MB, which isn't so bad.

Now when working with SD footage, I am, of course, looking to get the highest quality possible with a small file size. So I figured that using the h.264 codec (sony avc/aac) would be the best route. So I give that a try (by the way, the footage is widescreen)...and I set the pixel aspect ratio to 1.2121 since it is widescreen. As a result, the picture looks squeezed and not wide like widescreen. I do not know what the problem is.

So my questions for you guys are:

1.) Do you know the solution to my problem?

2.) Can you give me the best render settings for SD footage, shot at 29.92fps, 720x480 resolution, and widescreen (1.2121)? I need a very low file size.

3.) When I mentioned above my settings for rendering HD, I actually get 20mb file sizes for only about 30 seconds of footage. Do you guys have any alternative ways for rendering HD footage with small file sizes but amazing quality? (yes, I'm aware compression reduces quaity).

4.) If you can't answer the above questions, could you point me in the direction of a video compression software? Honestly, I'm in desperate need of small file sizes (below 20MB for videos that are even around 2 minutes in length...). If you guys know of any that can maintain good quality, please let me know.

*quick note*
-I tried rendering my SD footage as .WMV. Unfortunately, I received file sizes of 50-70MB for just 30 seconds of footage. The quality was perfect, but I just can't work with files that large.

I GREATLY appreciate any help!!!

Always keep your pixel aspect ratio at 1.0. So for SD 16:9 I'd try something like 640x360 or 720x406.

I usually use Mainconcept AVC/AAC.

I will be putting the footage on an HD video player streamed from my site. The exact same video player as the one featured on this website:

The web designers told me that I will need videos around 20mb or less if I want them to load quickly...so that's what I'm shooting for. However, I still need to get the best quality possible. The videos range from 15 seconds to 3 minutes in length.

Thank you for the suggestion Advantech, I will give that a shot.

Do you want them HD, or do you want them SD?

As WMV, you can play with the keyframe and quality settings to lower the file size. Depending on how much motion you have, you can have high-quality files at relatively low sizes.
