Render Selection is Rendering All

I'm trying to just select certain shots in FcP and render them only using the Render Selection options in my menu bar. However every time I do that FcP proceeds to render the entire sequence, never allowing me to render what I want. Has anyone had this happen? Is there something that is set wrong or is FCP to blame here?

Check the render selection menu up top. Is it possible you have all of the options checked? That might be why it renders everything instead of a singe kind of shot.
