Render only machine

I just bought a new machine for editing. I wanted to use my old box as a render-only machine on a network. I have two questions.
How would I set this up? Vegas's instruction manual says there's an option for it when you put in the CD. I've only been able to install a full version,
not a render-only version. Also, do I absolutely need a switch/router capable of 100Mbps or is 54Mbps enough?
Thanks!

There is no "render-only" installation anymore -- just install the full version.

The faster your network, the better performance you'll get. 10mbps is useless, 54 is not very useful, 100mbps is pretty much the minimum. Direct connection through firewire would be much better, as that'll give you 400mbps. Gigabit ethernet is better still.

Gigabit is very much worth it, it's enabled us to do DV over a network server. HDV don't quite work that way, nor does 4:2:2 YUV of course...but it's wonderful for projects longer than about 10 mins. Shorter projects aren't worth it due to the stitching time, IMO.
