Render much darker than preview window

Matt Grunau

Hi all. I captured footage in Vegas 6, and only applied a slight desaturatrion and color curves tweak.

The rendered footage came out much darker than was shown in the preview window. I opened the project, opened the rendered file in Windows media player, and went to exactly the same spot in Vegas and Media player. The media player much darker than the preview window. I have two 19" Dell flatscreens, and put the mdeia player directly over the preview window. Much much darker, almost to the point of not being viewable. Render was standard DV NTSC, same as base footage.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe you had the switch to not show effects turned on. Besides that, I dunno.

I found out a couple of things. First, it is not a matter of calibrating my monitor, nor was it a switch to show effects.

I reopened the render in Vegas, and it looked perfect. I also made a DVD to test, and that looked great too.

It seems to be a matter of both the capture settings, and the options I set in windows media player. I had rendered some things from After effects, played them in media player and they were perfect. in order for me to see the DV footage with the correct aspect ratio from vegas, I had to go into the options of media player, go to the advanced display options, and shut off one of the video acceleration options.

When I did, the video displayed properly as far as aspect ratio but became very dark. When I adjusted the advanced video options, setting it back to normal, it played with the right brightnes, but not the correct frame size (it ignored the .9 aspect ratio).

Then I looked at the capture settings for Vegas. It was set to 1 aspect ratio for display, and not .9. I even opened the rendered footage in Premiere and got the same foul up with the aspect ratio, as well as the unwanted darkening. But everything form After effects was perfect.

I think the matter lies in the correct capture settings (for preview at least), and not messing with the media player. I have never had this problem before from Vegas, this was my first cature/edit in 6.

Strange, as it seems to be both parts capture setings and video player settings. In order to get the bightness back, I lose aspect ratio. In order to have aspect ratio correcect in the player, I lose brightness.

In all though, the DVD test came out fine, though I am at a loss to explain the darkened video in Premiere with the wrong aspect ratio.

Lastly, I tried to render NOT using an openGML setting (avi version2) and was stopped at the 2 gig point. anyone know why?

I had notice during capture that when the video was playing, everything was fine. when I hit record however, the image instantly darkened slightly. This leads me to think the problem may lie in the capture settings, but as they were default, I assumed all would be fine. I never had this problem with Vegas 4.

Very damned odd.

Maybe it's a result of aliasing due to the aspect-ratio changes you were mentioning?

In one of the plugins (Secondary CC?), there's a preset for "Studio RGB to Computer RGB", which brightens things up a tad. Doesn't sound like this would apply in your case though. I use this to convert video for cdrom use.

Thanks. All. Still dont know why the problem lies in the media player, or why that would effect other apps, but that seems to be it.
