Render Memory Errors

I've been using PPro for years, currently CS3... but it wasn't until recently that I started doing a lot of HD with it. When I try to render a movie (AVI typically), it begins rendering... then after a time (varies) I get an error message stating that I'm out of memory... and it won't finish the render. I did actually get through a timeline once, but sebsequent attempts have been in vain.

Is this a common problem and what can I do about it? I've already adjusted my page file size, defragmented my hard drive and tried numerous other things... my system's running a dual core processor and 4gb ram... I can see how rendering HD might be slow, but I should be able to get through it.

Any ideas?

I may be the farthest thing from an authority on the issue but memory leaks have been an issue for generations (versions) in Premiere. I suspect that HD puts a significant additional load on your hardware.

Just a couple of thoughts banging around in my brain: Have you been certain to render the timeline before exporting to AVI? Also, if all else fails, can you/would it be reasonable (if the length of your movie is sustantial) to break it down into shorter lengths?

I'm running a dual xeon workstation with 4GB of RAM (although I'm not sure more than 3 gigs are addressable) but I rarely see this problem rendering out to AVI's -- I hope it works out for you--like to hear the outcome.

Best.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply... I have rendered my timelines before attempting to render the AVI... then I tried deleting all the preview render files, just in case they were contributing to the problem... no go.

At this point I really don't know else to try... splitting the timeline's a good idea...

Also in CS3 there's a new setting in either the Premiere preferences or in the project settings (sorry, I'm not in front of Premiere at the moment) that lets you choose Optimize for Speed or Optimize for Memory. Maybe you should check that that's set for Memory.

Does the render fail at exactly the same frame every time or random places? I once had a render that hung at the exact same frame, 100% repeatable. In the end, deleting the media cache files (conformed audio) cleared this up.

yes, I saw that setting and changed it from performance to memory... I've still been having issues in spite of it...

funny, that last night I got one uncompressed AVI export to work. I didn't change anything... it almost seems random. I'll hate to be on deadline and have it not work for me... grr.

I am having the same problem. I heard if you use photoshop files on the time line, that it could cause this problem. I've done some research and this is what I've found.

" Out of memory

  • Users with multiple monitor workstations have found that switching to a single monitor environment alleviates this problem. The technical reason for this is currently unknown.
  • If you are using Photoshop files in Premiere Pro 1.x then this is a known issue.
  • See also Adobe technical support document 330380."
I am using dual monitors...i'll test this theory.

are you using the adobe media encoder or the export to movie function. because i always seem to have issues with the export to movie function on big files. i would just use the media encoder and an equvilent quicktime for your avi and itll likely be fine.

I too am using multiple monitors... strange that that would be an issue. I'm using CS3, so psd's shouldn't be an issue.

Interesting idea about using the media encoder... I didn't realize you could export an uncompressed file using it, but I see that you can (quicktime). It was in fact the 'export movie' function causing problems... on longer hd projects.

yeah, ive very very rarely have had issues using the media encoder making the same type of file i was trying to make using the export to movie function. for some reason it handles rendering differently, and gets the job done.
