Render Length.

Thei is probably a stupid question but here goes...

For some reason, I can't seem to render an .avi file longer than 18:48. I am using 4.0 and am going from a 24p (inserting the 2:3:3:2) and my file is about 60 min long and after 18:48 it gives me an error message that my file or hard drive may be write protected. I tried to render a different project with the same specs and the same message came up after rendering 18:48. I have rendered longer projects in the past but they may have not been shot native 24p, though... I am using Win 2000 Pro on a old 800MHZ IBM laptop. I am going into a 200GB WD firewire hard drive. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Render Length.

What's your file system (hard drive format)?  If you're running a FAT32 file system (you probably are if you're not running XP, and you could be even then), the .AVI length is limited to 4GB, or about 18 minutes.  But if you have a NTFS file system, .AVI length isn't limited to that.

Go to "My Computer," right-click on your hard drive, and select "Properties."  It should tell you the file system.

If you were running XP, you should be able to reformat your hard drive to NTFS.  I think there's an option to allow you to do it without destroying your files (never tried it), but the best thing to do is to clear the drive and reformat from scratch.

Not sure about Win2000.

Re: Render Length.

Man, I am such a dumb a$$! I could've guess that one... Oh well. Looks like I'll render all my projects at 18 minute lengths or so until I get a new HD. Good thing I'm just doing shorts and misc. stuff...

Thanks for the answer!

Re: Render Length.

If your drive is FAT32 and you are running windows NT4, 2000 or XP, you can convert it to NTFS by using the following command in a command prompt window:

convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

Once you convert, you cannot go back to FAT32 without repartitioning and formatting the drive

Re: Render Length.

Wow - so I will be able to convert the drive without losing any of the info on it? That's awesome! I'll try it tonight when I get home.

Thanks again!

Re: Render Length.

Well, I render them as avi files and then I run them through DVD Architect and make DVDs. Yesterday I tried skipping a step and render my file as a mpeg2 instead of the avi but I couldn't get the mpeg2 file to render right... The hour long .veg file took over 20 hours to render as the mpg file (no fx, just adding in 3:2 pulldown and letterboxing anamorphic footage) and when I played it back in Vegas there was no sound and it was all steppy. This just happend this morning so I have to investigate a little more so we'll see...

Re: Render Length.

Whoa -- 20 hours. STEEEEP.

Actually, I've found better results in DVD Architect by using .AVI files and letting DVD-A convert.
