Render for Web

Hi all,

I have a 25-minute movie currently rendered as a 140-meg WMV file and a 1.2-gig MPEG2 file.

What would be the best way to compress/render that down into something I could upload to YouTube and still, obviously, maintain best possible quality?

FWIW, the project is a mini documentary for/on a couple with a severely disabled autistic boy named Levi. They're trying to raise enough money to go to an innovative training program specifically tailored for kids like Levi. My plan is to embed this on the website we've just put up ( Help-Levi-Learn.org ) as they try to build awareness.

Any help appreciated.

25 minutes will be tough to get small enough to be one clip on Youtube at decent resolution. I would try encoding at something like Windows Media, 320x240 at 400 or 500Kbps. You might have to break it up and put up a part 1 and part 2. I've seen a number of people do this.

Not sure if Youtube accepts it as one of their formats, but you might also want to try H.264. It is supposed to be substantially higher quality than Windows Media for the same bitrate.

I needed to upload a 30 minute short to youtube, and it took several tries. I'll try to remember my settings. I believe the sound was rendered at 128kbps at 44kHz, video at 320x240, 352 kbps. The size came to about 77mb, so you might be able to set your film at a slightly higher bitrate, maybe 512kbps, maybe a little less. I hope these setting my help, maybe in the least as a seed to figure out different, maybe better settings.

Hey guys,

Thanks for responding. Here's what I've learned:

1. YouTube now has a 10-minute max. And they mean it. They've also got a 100 meg file size limit.

2. GoogleVideo does not have any time limit nor does it have filesize
restrictions. Although they clearly do their own recompression, I think as flash , this seemed to be a good fit. Not great, but good.

If anyone wants to take a look at it, I'd be eager for (constructive) criticism on the editing side. The titling in particular I'm not happy with. I do some fly through with one one of the words using crop to zoom way in and then key frame it out to make it look like it's moving past the camera and flying into frame. Anway, the word is way over pixilated even in the high res version. Is it the quality of the font itself that does that, or I can tweak the settings to improve the quality close in?

Anyway, comments welcome:

If you get a director account on youtube there's no time limit. the size limit remains though.

Hey Billy, thanks for the tip, although apparently that's no longer true. Just opened a director account and still got rejected because of size. Oh well.
