Render for a Festival?

I had an invitation to participate in a film festival in Feb. If it makes it they will be showing it on a big screen in a movie theater for 700+ people.

Right now its 20 minutes long and is rendered/exported out at 720x480. I played it on my TV(63") and it looks fine...little grainy but nothing horrible. Will this work on a huge screen or should I do something else?

Footage is 720x480 Mini DV

thanks,
Rich

The closest I've come to this issue is experimenting with 'adding film grain' using AE, to an upscaled to HD film clip, originally shot in SD.

The process did take some time to render, and since I don't have a large auditorium projector I wasn't able to check the results in a 'real' situation, when I zoomed on the resulting image, the process did eliminate some of the artifacts of upscaling, such as jaggies on diagonal lines. Didn't eliminate, just made them less noticable.

Whether this 'works' or not, is left to experiment...

As a note I also didn't change the 'film grain' filter parameters over time to vary the effect. The idea is to make it look like it was shot on say 16mm or 8mm and upscaled for presentation.

You are stuck with 720 x 480 but you could export it as a MOVIE (avi/mov) uncompressed. but you will need to find out how they intend to "project it" and what the tech spec requirement is.

I suspect if you saw it on your tv it was probably from a DVD or mpeg (or other compressed file)

Depends on the quality of source clip you played to your 63" TV .

You may have been able to do better.

Well they want us to send a DVD and the one I played on my TV was only 700MB. So I can get it closed to the 4 Gig limit.

I was just checking to see if even if I had it at it's best quality at 720X480 would look good on a big movie theater or would it look like crap

You dont give us a lot of info to work on here except...

700mb for 20 mins is very low and so must be heavily compressed.

Max out the bit rate somewhat and see if it will get closer to the capacity of the DVD
