Render / Exporting curiosity

Compressor will give you more control and provides a batch processing workflow. The workflow part is probably the key difference between Compressor & DVD Studio. DVD Studio will allow you to change many of the same settings as Compressor does in relation to DVDs. I cant say for certain but I would bet that DVDStudio uses the same encoders as Compressor does. So I think from a quality standpoint you should be getting the same results when using the same settings in either program.

you can create your own presets in Compressor and drag them onto your project with compressor. In DVD Studio you have to go into the encoding settings and change them with every different project. Again, thats more about workflow and customiztion then it is actual Image quality. You could argue that the customization of your settings in Compressor will allow a better quality result then DVD Studio Pro simply because you have more settings to tweak.

I personally prefer the Compressor workflow because of the presets I've made, and the ability to render out different products at the same time such as podcasts or streaming versions. And then there is the speed factor which I keep talking about.... DVD Studio is too slow for rendering.

So then, if I export from FCP as a QT file, then use Compressor to convert it to an Mpeg before authoring, I will get a better quality file than taking that QT file and importing it directly into SP4, correct?

But, if I understand you correctly, there is no loss of quality by exporting first as a QT file before going to compressor...

You will probably get the same result quality wise Compressor VS DVD Studio. Especially if using he same settings in either app. Compressor is a different workflow and is meant as a workhorse app that transfers any format into any format. And no, there is no loss of quality by exporting a QT file pre-compressor or DVD Studio. As long as your sequence settings and export settings are equal or better then your source settings, you will be fine.
