Render Crashes ??

I updated to Vegas Pro 8 a short time ago. I just finished shooting a training video for a client (2.5 hours edited length). That is divided into 3 separate segments about 48 to 50 minutes for each segment. Each segment is rendered separately. There is a primary video track where I laid down the instructor speaking before a group.. very simple, straight forward shot. The video track immediately above contains still shots (slides, saved in Photoshop as ".PNG" files).
A third video track contains only titles and superimposed type as "text generated media" created in Pro 8. There is one audio track.

My computer has a Intel Pentium 4 CPU @ 3.2oGHz chip with 3 GB of RAM. The video card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 that feeds 2 CRT monitors. I downloaded my primary video to a 500GB USB external hard drive, edited the footage and saved the first, finished 48 minute segment to an internal hard drive (D) INCLUDING the check box "Save Media with FIle".

I started to render an MPG2 file (for DVD Archietect) but the render time was amazingly SLOW. Projected completion time was over 18 hours. I let it run overnight and it eventually crashed after 7 hours with less than 5% rendered.

I tried to render it as an AVI file and had the same results. I then tried to render it as a QUicktime 7 Movie.. it seemed to start rendering faster, but the program crashed after 3-4 minutes...

Windows has not crashed... Vegas crashes (error message and "has to stop").

The Operating System is XP PRO - SP3. I had been only been running SP2 until 2 weeks ago. I upgraded my ADOBE software to CS4 and the upgrades would NOT install without first downloading and installing SP3.

This is very frustrating! Render times are horrendous... and Vegas crashes after a few hours at less than 4-5% completion. I don't know if the Adobe Upgrades (PhotoShop, Dreamweacer, Premier Pro, Flash, etc,) are interfering with Vegas??? OR if SP3 is causing the problem???? or if I am the problem because I don't have Vegas Preferences set correctly???? or if the still shots being formatted as ".PNG" are the problem???? :crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

Sorry this is so long... but I wanted to include everything I am doing so it might trigger a solution from someone.

Thanks!!! :crybaby:

What kind of video is it? What kind of FX do you have on the video?

How big are the slides? Did you zoom in on that at all?

I do have the say that your hardware is 5-6 years behind. Shouldn't necessarily be a problem, but there could be some kind of bottleneck with it, and it could make a difference with some of the newer types of video footage out there.
