Removing mask bars

I've seen several Quicktime clips that have the top and bottom black bars from cinematic aspect ratio formats removed. It would certainly help reduce the size of the clip for the web. Frankly, I am having trouble following the FCP Help instructions on how to do it and would appreciate if someone could offer a clearer explanation.

Thanks,

Re: Removing mask bars

Are you sure it wasn't just shot and made in 16:9? If it was actually shot in 4:3 with letterbox, there is a way to remove that letterbox from the movie at the end. However, I have never had a need to do that, so one of the more proficient FCPers will have to help you with that.

You could also do a search for it in this forum, I remember them talking about it in the past...

Use compressor and then set your own preset to crop by 103 on top and 103 on bottom.

Expr'ment and you'll get it.

Re: Removing mask bars

Thanks for the advice, Captain! Now, how do I get the size of the file down to something reasonable? Even the 320x240 QT files from this procedure end up around 50megs.

cheers,
s.
