Removing Boom Arm Out Of Frame, Please Help

Hi,

I'm having problems figuring out how to remove a boom arm from a shot I'm working on.

I have a dolly shot that goes down the side of some lockers in a high school, which have kids standing next to them and in between the lockers in the middle of the shot are two black windows, and when we pass them you can see a boom arm in the distance moving along with the shot.

I thought maybe the eight point garbage matte in FCP could solve this, but I've been messing around with it for a while and haven't been able to figure it out.

Anybody know the best way to take something out of the frame even when the camera is actually moving and the object is moving along with it?

I'm using Final Cut Pro 5 and I'm on a time constraint and need to fix the shot as soon as possible, so any help is very much appreciated! Thanks!

Hard to tell from discription but you could export a still frame of the worst frame. Take it into Photoshop and paint out the boom and then re-import still into FCP. This becomes your clean plate. Animate it to matc hthe camera motion and create a matte for the foreground so the section inbetween the lockers is replaced with your clean frame.

FCP is fairly limited though. Take a look at After Effects or even better is Commotion, which has tools to help do rig removal such as this (superclone from different frames, full rotoscoping, motion tracking, etc)

I tend to do stuff like that in Commotion. Maybe needs a motion track and then clone out the boom. Depends how many frames the boom is in for.

If you are rushed and don't care that much, you could crop the shot in FCP, but personally I would paint it out.

I'll try the PhotoShop method out. It will take some time I imagine because it's a long shot and there are two black windows and the boom arm is moving literally at the same speed with the dolly, but I'll see if it will work.

If it doesn't work, I'll post back and maybe there could be an alternative method to the problem. Thanks a ton for the suggestions guys.

It's a lot easier to do moving garbage mattes of this sort of thing in Motion should you happen to have it.

Noah, I do have Motion, but I'm very new to it and only know how to do a couple of things with the program. Do you have any guides that could help me do the garbage mattes in Motion?
