Remove Ambient Hiss/Noise

Big lesson here jChan. It is better to capture clean audio than to try and clean it in post.

Technically there are some things you can do, but realistically, it is a very fine line between make the clip sound better and royally screwing it up. I can confidently say this because I have tripped over that line and fallen in to the abyss on more than on occasion.

FCP doesn't give you a whole lot of options. STP or ProTools or other audio software will give you more options.

1) try to reach a better sound by removing what you don't need with EQ and Compression/expansion. Put a high pass set to about 100hz and a low pass set to about 8khz. Set a parametric EQ by boosting to +12db and sweeping the frequency. Once you hear the baddness accentuated, cut instead of boosting. Finally, you can try to add some compression or expansion but this may just increase the noise floor.

2) key frame or cut and paste out car honks and loud noises.

3) if you have access to noise reduction software, you can try to make a noise print and kindly ask the software to remove only that noise from your clip. In most cases, the software doesn't comply and dunks your whole clip into a bucket of water.

4) if you have the budget, send it out (untouched) to be manipulated by a professional with very expensive software.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Maybe someone else on the forum has had better experience.

Thanks Awake. We were moving between interior and exterior shots through out the day and forgot the windshield for some. I'm just looking for a noise removal filter I can mess around. It doesn't need to be perfect just obviously not bad.

I prob need to take a sound editing class.

Listened and ran it through Rx but the problem is that an important quality of her voice is sitting right in that city roar so you can do a fair amount of cleanup but it gets really touchy with her vocal quality.

BUT it's not a missing wind screen it's the sound of the city. If this was a wind screen problem you would be getting big low end hits and your not. What you have is a nice city roar. I spend a lot of time recording those and it's what you SHOULD be hearing, though the ideal balance would be a bit lower. You might pull a little low end out but I wouldn't mess with it much because she's nice and clear and it sounds like what we know it should. If you play with pulling a little low end out you should be able to pull her a bit out of the roar. But if I were able to get her crystal clear this is exactly the kind of sound I would be adding into the BG tracks so I wouldn't sweat it too much.
