I am wondering if any of you know a link to a free plugin to be used in sound forge to remove background noise. I just finished my first project....well almost finished...but some of it was shot on a beach and I want the beach noice to be reduced if not removed. I would use the eq but I really have no experience editing audio... Any thoghts?

Re: removal of background noise?

How about INSERTing and AUDIO ENVELOPE?

Goto INSERT and Select - AUDIO ENVELOPE...

(Make sure the Audio Track is selected)

Re: removal of background noise?

What will that do? I just got the software 2 weeks ago and I am not super compfortable with it yet. By the way I have a DVX on the way...and should be here Friday....very exciting. ;D
Thanks, Nate

Re: removal of background noise?

Do you have VEGAS or SOUND FORGE or BOTH?

An Audio Envelope will allow you to control the Audio.

Re: removal of background noise?

I have Vegas and a version of Sound Forge that does not let me do much, unless I upgrade. I understand that enolopes are Vegas's control method...however I am wondering how to use them to remove the background. I know I could drop the audio levels everytime my interview is not speaking but will that not sound strange to hear the ocean when he is talking and not hear it when he is? :-/

Re: removal of background noise?

I mean hear the ocean when he talks and not hear it when is not talking :)

Re: removal of background noise?

No worries.

Do what I suggested above: Goto INSERT and Select - AUDIO ENVELOPE...

You'll see a line run through the AUDIO Track. Whenever you DOUBLE CLICK on that line a little SQUARE will appear. You can move them around the track (Up, Down, etc). I suggest experimenting with this option.

What BEACH NOISE do you have? Wind and Waves? External MIC or Onboard MIC?

Re: removal of background noise?

It was a wieless lav. And there is a consistant waves breaking noise. Its almost like white noise but a little different.

I have done some experimenting with using the EQ on the low levels, it helps a bit but not to much. I will try playing with the envolope levels a bit but I am a little worried that it might sound strange with the ocean coming in and out. I watched Douglas Spotted Eagles Vegas Edititng Workshop and he touched upon Sony's Noise Reduction but I looked into it and its like $200. It looked like a cool tool though you take a picture of the noise that is bothering you and the software EQ's it out almost exactly.
Off the subject a bit, I was hired to produce a segment and edit it. They want the segmented outputed with the VO and Nat sound in a main mix but they want the music in stereo. I think this is possible using the bus option but I am not sure how that works either. Thankfully Gary Kleiner, one of Sony's Demo Guys, lives right here in Fort Collins, but he is at NAB for the week so I dont want to call and bug him because I am sure he is busy busy busy.

Re: removal of background noise?

Noise Reduction is an awesome tool. If you're being paid for your work, it's worth having in your arsenal just for what it does in isolating background noise and removing it. I'm amazed and how much better my audio sounds now that I'm using it.

Re: removal of background noise?

I concur. Noise Reduction is awesome. It's not really *cheap*, but it's totally worth the price if it's something you think you would use often. I don't know if there's a trial version, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Re: removal of background noise?

No trial version only a demo that is unusable for a project. I am concidering buying it because I shoot near water a lot and it always bugs me. If I could bring down the background just a bit it would be great. Thank you guys for your replies...

Re: removal of background noise?

The thing with Noise Reduction is it works seamlessly as a plug-in with Vegas' audio tools. I do have a friend doing the same with Adobe Audition. Perhaps a trial there you can test out.

Re: removal of background noise?

A couple of things: I recently had to deal with traffic noise over a couple of scenes in my short film. while noise reduction software is great for things like removing humming or buzzing - stuff at a constant audio frequency (I used it to almost eliminate the hum from a refrigerator I forgot to turn off in a kitchen scene), I had less success with the traffic noise which I'm thinking is similar to your problem. In fact, the noise reduction software introduced artificial sounding artifacts and I abandoned it altogether. The idea of ducking the audio between bits of dialogue can be effective. I laid softer traffic noise in between the words. Second, in my case at least, if the words are audible, I notice my audience barely noticed what i thought was this terrible audio problem - my point being it may not be as bad as you think. Third, I discovered that I already had two software applications that had noise reduction built in. Once I set one of those programs as my external audio editor in Vegas, when I sent a copy of the audio event to that program, I was able to apply the noise reduction and then bring the event back into Vegas as new take. One program was Nero 6 (which is in my experience a nightmare buggy program which I normally tell people to avoid) and the other was Magix Video Deluxe (now something Video 2004). Both cost less than $70. In addition, there are several FREE noise reduction programs available on-line for the PC (and Mac) though the names escape me right now. But by setting those programs as your external audio editor you should be able to apply noise reduction without paying $200 for Sony Noise Reduction.
