Rember the old days?

Re: Rember the old days?

Doooode! You are, like, soooo old!

My first encounter with the Electronic Mistress was the TRS-80, before they had any of the newer fancy models with cassette recorder built-in. I wrote my own Star trek turn-based game in BASIC in 4K of RAM! Later, rewrote it in machine language, which allowed for a lot more features.

Re: Rember the old days?

I'm remembering a TI something, not Tandy... I mispoke.  But yes, just a keyboard and I had to use my dad's answering machine as a tape deck!!  It had an expansion slots for additon of SPRITES!!!

Oooohhhh

Re: Rember the old days?

Expansion Slots! that was techo ! a 16k Microbee (Aussie made) was the thing down here. Same deal, Basic & tapes. I found an old manual for the 32k version & took it to a local Computer guru, they couldn't believe it :o

Oh man! I remember a Star Trek text game that barely had graphics...in fact....you guys ready for this?? I think it was HYPERCARD....LOL it had a little blink of a soundbyte after each turn, and very basic MacPaint drawn black and white outlined "graphics" I think my dad downloaded the whopping 70k game overnight or something...the details are blurry...

The VERY first computer I remember having was a Commodore 64...My dad had a Lisa as well....

Re: Rember the old days?

Wait a minute, Hillbaby -- Hypercard came out with the Mac... so you aint as old as us.

Re: Rember the old days?

The first computer I ever messed around with, was my friends Atari 400. The first computer I ever owned was an Atari 520ST. You had to load the OS from a floppy. Then 4 months later, I got the OS ROM chips added to the machine, so I didn't have to load off the floppy anymore.

Great... Now I feel like pulling out my old Atari machines from the attic and seeing if they still work.

Re: Rember the old days?

No man, if I were as old as you I'd have three kids too!
I was just excited to remember that star trek game.
I am a baby! ;D
And I'm learning to appreciate it.

Re: Rember the old days?

The first computers I messed with were the TI 44/9A and Apple ][. My dad was going to buy me the TI, but that year they quit making it so he bought me the Commodore 64.

The rest, as they say, is history :D

Re: Rember the old days?

I couldn't afford the Commodore 64, and didn't think I'd really need that much processing power, so I settled for the Commodore Vic 20! I remember following the manual, typing in rows and rows of stupid symbols, for hours, just to make a ball bounce across the screen one time. I swore then and there that computers were a stupid waste of time, which I still believe. I do all of my computing and editing on an abacus.

Re: Rember the old days?

I had a friend who got the Vic-20 instead of the 64.... I used to make fun of him all the time.

Instead of thinking it was a waste of time to enter all those "symbols" to make a ball bounce, I was intrigued and wanted to know WHY that sequence of symbols made the ball bounce. I later wrote a Turbo Pascal interpreter in Commodore BASIC. It was slow, but functional. I guess that is why I now sit at a desk programming all day, instead of roaming the streets filming for a living.

I gotta do something about that!

Re: Rember the old days?

My dad worked for McBee and Litton Industries in the early 70s and was always bringing home crazy **** they were working on. I distinctly remember him pulling a credit card thin LCD calculator out of his pocket around the time I was six.

It was kinda like living in an episode of I Dream of Genie - except without Barbara Eden... and my dad didn't work for NASA (at least directly) or have a friend named Major Healy. Other than that, it was exactly like I Dream of Genie.

Re: Rember the old days?

First computer was a PET computer in prep school 1984. Loaded a game of Night Drive on it from an audio cassette. Tried the tape in my walkman and it sounded like a modem trying to get connected. Good times.

Re: Rember the old days?

My first was a TRS-80 Model I. She was a beauty. We had fun and experienced the Internet for the first time, together.

We all remember our first Internet experience. It's like losing your virginity. ....Mine was mid-day, when nobody was home. The computer and I booted-up and logged on. The internet service asked me questions (name, age, etc.), I lied about all the answers because I was only 13. I then got scared and turned it off. ...Much like my first sexual experience. :D

For weeks I thought the FBI was after me (I had just seen War Games). It was a good computer.  Wish we hadn't broken up.  :'(
