Remake madness continues!

Now they are remaking Commando! This just mystifies me because it's not like Commando has a great story or anything. The only thing great about it is Schwarzenegger, kicking ass at the very height of his 'Neggery goodness! Its only strength is the power of his persona. If you want any more proof, imdb the director Mark L. Lester and see what his Arnold-less films look like. Making Commando without Schwarzenegger is like making The Pink Panther without Peter Sellers (oh, wait, they did that!).

Yes, yes they did.

Pink Panther (2006) |Worldwide Gross: $158,851,357
It cost half that to make.

It's not about the art in Hollywood, it's about the $$.

LOL Horrigan. Right on the money... pun intended.

Batutta! You're beginning to baffle me a little: by now, you ought to have realized that it's all about the money. If you want to see some original content, you're gonna have to put up for it. Or, well, WE will have to put up for it. Hahaha. But, I want some money as well... so.

Otherwise, we're going to be watching multi-million-dollar reruns for a while.

Of course I realize it's all about the money, I'm just saying as a property, Commando has little value other than Schwarzenegger. The title and story are as generic as they come. Even Pink Panther does have a specific character as the lead. The lead character in Commando was a generic action guy, only given idiosyncracy by the Ahnuld. Just seems pointless to me and a bad investment.

marketing.
That's why.

marketing is so outrageously expensive and inefficient that studios are doing anything they can to get a leg up.
By starting with a title that people are already familiar with they are way ahead of the game in terms of familiarity and recognition.

Hell - we're already talking the film and it hasn't been made yet.
That is the real value in a remake... not the original story, box office success, or anything else ...
just how recognizable the property is to begin with.

RED DAWN remake's a good example of that.

And, if someone remade TOY SOLDIERS, I'd probably go and watch it.

Boy, though, I do not disagree: remakes are getting out of hand.

But really, how recognizable is the title Commando? It's a fairly generic word. It doesn't imply any kind of concept. The first film wasn't wildly popular. And it doesn't feature an iconic character. Again, even comparing it to a lame remake like The Pink Panther, Inspector Clouseau was an iconic character. But Commando? Take away Schwarzenegger and all you're left with is a movie indistinguishable from the thousands of direct to video action flicks of the 80's and 90's. Still don't get it, unless the people who are remaking it are just plain dumb, which is also possible.

It's more recognizable than something completely new that we have no association with.
That's something.

And while it might not be as recognizable as something like Pink Panther - it definitely rings a bell with people from a certain generation.
It also goes so show that many of the 'iconic' films have already been remade.
What else do they have left to pillage?
:)

I don't know any guy around my age +/- 5 years or so who hasn't heard of Commando.

You compared it to the Pink Panther and that was a good comparison.
A Commando remake already has buzz over x action film. Hell, we're already talking about it and I know nothing about it.

Yeah, I see that, but there's nothing about the story that makes me want to see Commando. It's like studios making films based on board games. They are ONLY trading on name recognition. TV shows, comics and cartoons at least have narrative content -- concepts, stories and characters that I can understand people wanting to see translated to the big screen. Where is the compelling narrative content in Monopoly, or Battleship?...Yeah, Commando has a story but a really dumb one. When these board game movies and dubious remakes hit the screen I think we'll find out how far name recognition can take a film. Then again, they did make a pretty funny movie about two dudes going to White Castle.

Me neither. But there was nothing about a Pink Panther remake that I wanted to see either and it still made a lot of ca$h.

I even like Steve Martin to some degree. Still had no interest in seeing it.

Bottom line, if this remake business wasn't working for them they would have stopped doing it a long time ago.

"You're a funny guy, Sully. I like you. That's why I'm going to kill you last."

Also, I find it funny that Arnold's character is named John Matrix. Sounds like the name of some cliched space marine character from some old school shooter video game.

As for a Commando remake, it is unnecessary, as TAKEN was pretty much a modern day Commando set in Europe.

The movie they could make that could be fun would be an adaptation of the NES classic CONTRA, which was basically just a blend of Aliens, Predator, Rambo, and Commando. The picture on the front of the box is obviously depicting an Arnold and a Stallone.
