Hey guys,

If you wanted to have Medusa, Moses, Zeus, etc. appear in a movie would you need permission for that?

Please let me know.

Thanks

No you wouldn't, it's in the public domain. It's the case with most tales/fables. Heck, those stories were probably made up by your grandmother anyways. write away.

I think you're pretty safe with the three you listed but it's not quite that simple with other things. Works of literature can be public domain in the US but not in the EU and vice versa.

The right answer to all legal questions is, go ask a lawyer.

Ask Hercules.

No, you don't need permission. Good luck, I hope you write the next 'Clash of the Titans'. That movie kicked arse.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm still debating on if I want this idea to start as a comic first since I can have that done exactly how I want it... Since it's gonna be an over exaggerated description of the worlds future in a fictional story, jumping right into the movie would cost too much for me lol...

I'd probably even start it as an e-comic with a narrarator or something... Just a few small comic strips on a web site (if I ever make one) to have visitors get familiar with the character sketches, names, stories... etc.

Thanks again

I'd be careful with this. You should check to make sure Zeus and Medusa aren't repped by agents. Just me, but I wouldn't want either of those two pissed off at me.

That got a giggle out of me, B.

Zeus, Medea AND Moses? I'm intrigued. I didn't know Z and M hung out with Moses. They certainly didn't in my Classics class at school. Miss McElleran would be most pissed off. Fantastic. Good luck, Future.

Well, think of it this way... get permission from WHO? Nobody owns copyright or trademarks to any of the possible dieties or mythologies. There is nobody to get permission from, and all are public domain. You could make your own movie about Jesus in a romantic affair with the Flying Spaghetti Monster if you like.

There are only two religious groups to watch out for:

Scientology: They get very sensitive about L Ron Hubbard appearing without permission (especially for parody purposes). They also like to sue people. This shouldn't be a problem as L Ron Hubbard wouldn't make for a compelling story or character anyway.

Islam: If you have persians as bad guys they will throw a political stink, if you depict Muhammed they will riot, burn your house down, and behead your neighbors. =P

Off the topic, but since you mentioned it, go with the comic first. Let the popularity of the comic draw the money to make the feature. Worked for Miller and 300.

Yeah, it worked for Spawn also... But thats a long shot... And they both drew there comics... Which is something I cannot do... (If I could this would have been done two years ago.) And the only reason I started thinkin' of the comic stuff again (since I actually thought of writing comics before coming up with movie/documentary ideas) is because I edited something for a guy who knows somebody that wants to draw/print/illustrate (whatever you wanna call it) a comic...

But since I haven't talked to the guy that knows the guy that wants to make comics and stuff, I'm sure this is either gonna fail or not happen at all...

I won't let it frustrate me... I know I will meet somebody that'll at least wanna do the slideshow comic on a website... haha..

Thanks for the advice and stuff...

PS: The only reason I wanted to do comics first is because: no permits, easy to get big crowds of people, and no limitations on actions/violence since the artist can draw what I can't get CGI, props, and stuntmen for...
