So I bought a letus extreme and it came with the rail system, but no way that I see to mount the camera to the rail, I mean it has the square box or with threading or whatever, but I don't trust simply putting a screw from my tripod into that and calling it a day... would any quick release work for the typical rail system, is there something else I need to get?

that is the piece that I mount the camera too, just not sure how to do it best...

Will I need two? one for top, and one for tripod or will the tripod quick release that I get when I get my tripod mount easily to to the rail system

thats what i did. i have two. it looks like you have the indisystem rail kit from the pic.

I do, so if I'm planning to buy a 503 hdv head and tripod that comes with a quick release should I still get two of these?

If a 503 is in your future you need a manfrotto 577 QR system. Comes with a 501PL plate (the dovetail looking parts). The 503 uses the same 501PL. This will allow you to take the camera off the rig and on the tripod. So between the 577 system and the 503 you should be all set;

As for how it might bolt to your tripod and your rig check out this video. Obviously it features our gear along with the Giottos Baddgsx had mentioned but the assembly is pretty much what you would do on any rig when mounting to a tripod;
